What the RN does for its living .. and to safeguard yours

May I recommend "Safeguarding the Nation" by John Roberts, Seaforth 2009, as a briefing for anyone on ARRSE ho doesn't really understand what the RN has been doing worldwide over the last fifty years, in accordance with its tradition that 'There Is Nothing the Navy Cannot Do'. Just because a lot of it is and was out of sight doesn't mean it wasn't happening. A lot of nauseas were headed off and never came to anything because we could deploy seapower.

Worked examples of the flexibility of seapower: in 1997 there was (as usual with Saddam) trouble in the Gulf. An original decision to deploy RAF Tornados had to be ditched because UK couldn't get overflying rights. So we sent an aircraft carrier, which doesn't have those problems. Another: in the Adriatic, when the fog that is a given for northern Italy for weeks on end inhibited flying, the aircraft carrier was able to move to where fog wasn't and provide the missing cover.
