Re: The SA80 "under fire" again

I repeat a suggestion that I've made before. Trial it in the field. Pick a suitable weapon of larger calibre (that should be fun), train up a couple of sections from a couple of platoons and see how it works out for real. Anything else is largely armchair pub-talk.

At one time I owned a 7.62 Winchester civilian spec M14 with a S&b scope and a Ruger Mini 14 5,56mm Ranch rifle with same scope mounted and though they were both very accurate weapons I know which one I would use for Homo Sapians 7,62 every time
And to think, I had no Idea I could bring so much fun and frivolity to others

Myth. It would take a seriously sh*gged-out hinge pin to achieve that, i.e. the Armourer wasn't pulling their weight. I was in a unit shooting team, I used to clean mine regularly, and the zero never changed.

Oh - and as a "usual suspect on the shooting forum", I'm obviously weird. I liked SLR, but I liked the SA80 more.
    True! :D

Yes, if you don't clean it.

Any reports yet? From what I've seen in a 2-minute web-crawl, they appear to be being used as designated sniper or SF weapons; I had general purpose use in mind.

Re: The SA80 "under fire" again

This report seems to suggest that soldeirs armed with rifle are being outshot at 900m by people with AK47?

I would be mightily impressed with anyone able to use AK47 and achieve centre mass hits a t 900m - the sight post is massive for a start and the sights and tolerances of AK are shite for accuracy. Coupled with a bullet whose ballistic performance is poor after c400m and you have some pretty poor reporting.

The only fault was that every time you stripped a SLR you cocked up your sighting, but with some of the state of the art sights now avalable I think it would be the dogs at quite long range

Well one things for sure, if you were 600 yds downrange of me and I was chucking 7.62 rounds in your direction, you'd be left in no doubt I was cross with you even if I was missing. :D
    What about this badboy?

    http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2...bullpup-rifle/

7.62 and forward eject so that it can be fired from the left shoulder

    Out

Just realised that this is shown in another thread (QMs). Sorry for repeat.

Re: The SA80 "under fire" again

Now is this a a squaddie urban myth or not?

When I was first trained on a SLR the instructor spieled off all the stuff that the SLR was exceptional at,and either these were correct or every single Unit small arms instructor I later met was in on the same conspiracy.

The SLR could fully penetrate a correctly compacted sandbag, lengthways.

A SLR could penetrate up to 18" of hard wood.

A SLR has a chance of penetrating the armour on a FV432 on the side or rear

FIBUA,the SLR could shoot through double brick walls at peeps hiding at the edge of windows/peepholes and could easily penetrate walls and floors/ceilings.

I never got the chance to try any of that,as I was given the comedy gun SMG when on tour.....are these correct ?

Lets ignore the fact that 7.62 soviet is a totally different round to 7.62 NATO shall we.
