Only thing is I imagine a blinged out M4 would cost as much as an out the box G36 from H&K.
Having lived in Moss Side during the early years of my short life I don't recall seeing armed police but then I was on the outer edge of the really rough bit..ah well, lets just hope in a few months we don't hear a news report of Plod leaving something bangy in a chippy/Gregs/Currys"The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men." - Samuel Adams, 1771.

Re: Armed plod on routine foot patrols!
Another gun spotter here!
Definitely HKs, had to check for various barrel lengths and calibers, but of course H&K makes it just how you like, provided you buy them in large enough series.
The journo writing the piece has obviously been on the Met's web-pages and quoted, almost verbatim, the spiel on G17 and MP5s, but whoever picked the picture out of archives must have picked one from trials of sorts.
Of course, there's a huge difference between a 9x19 mill short sub-machine gun, through 5.56x45 mill to 7.62x51 (HK417) assault rifle.
here's the link to the manufacturer's glossy pages:

Have a hard time figuring out the TTPs of UK armed police, but I know what I would bring to an inner city gang/turf war!

I assume the gun piccies were stock images, and not a reference to the article.

Re: Armed plod on routine foot patrols!
MP5 Carbines are more common I think, but select-fire versions are in use too - I assume the same applies to the 5.56 carbines, which are no doubt being chosen following the lead of US law enforcement types who say that 9mm (especially FMJ) is actually much more of an overpenetration risk than (at least fragmenting or expanding rounds in) 5.56.
I've often wondered about the double magazines too. Like others, can't help wondering whether there's an "ally" factor at play.

That's alledgely 18 on foot, but there are always gunships provided by SO19 and SO6 doing the rounds, (excuse the pun). Armed response is never far away especially in Central London.

Yep, stock images. The officers in the piccies aren't even Met bobbies.

Did Operation Trident not include armed routine patrols?

Re: Armed plod on routine foot patrols!
And armed officers at Heathrow etc. even supported by the army at times, so I don't see what the big deal is about having routinely armed officers on the street.

Re: Armed plod on routine foot patrols!
A number of things, firstly, UK Police AFO's don't have 'rules of engagement', they use the 'Conflict Management Model' to ensure that the force option they choose, lethal or otherwise is lawful and proportionate to the threat posed at the time, they must then justify their actions in law.
Secondly no 'Home Office' forces have 'fire selectors', all their long arms are 'carbines', in that they are single shot only, though at least one Non HO forces does have automatic weaponary (CNC).
Lastly this is not a new tactic a number of forces with a 'standing authority' have been doing it for years.

Re: Armed plod on routine foot patrols!
I can't see anything wrong with this. The PSNI have 9,200 officers, every one of whom is routinely armed, and it doesn't affect their performance.
Perhaps if all PCs were conversant with firearms from day 1 of week 1 we might not have SFOs shooting people in lessons or DPG officers leaving pistols in Starbucks...
