They'll tell you that you have to pay (it's actually free), sometimes as much as £200, and that if you find that you pay more with the water meter, you can't switch back to an unmetered supply. You can within 12 months after the water meter's fitted.
Not my experience at all. My daughter decided to have one fitted as there are only two people in her house and out most of the working day. The water company could not get one in quick enough for her and were most helpful. So much so that we suspected they were up to something.

In Kent I applied to have a meter installed as I know I'm paying way too much. At least one third too much in fact. To get one I have to carry out a petition in the area as they will meter the street/part of the street and then wait about 6-18 mths and if I'm lucky we'd get metered.
Tell them you're going to fit a power shower. The meter will be in by the end of the week.
    Thermite is the answer.

    The question is irrelevant.

They are also running an absolutely colossal project to irrigate northern China .

Unfortunately, this looks like robbing Peter to pay Paul. There's only so much you can take out of the Yangtze.
