Re: Soldiers told not to use Belfast Black Taxi
I managed to get a paid for (by the job centre) recce to NI before I moved there. One of the blokes from the job centre was Belfast born and bred and I was advised to avoid all the black cabs especially those round Donegall Square. Sound advice and I took it.
When I lived there, I used the black cabs to get from the city centre to the Abbey Centre (and back). Reason, it was cheaper and quicker than a bus though you did have to share your cab with large women who all seeemed to have corned beef legs and who all (strangely) had snotty wee neds called Billy or Darren (Darn!).
Anywhere else I avoided black cabs (almost) like the plague as I didn't want a guided tour of the Falls Road with my accent and my (military) background. There were a few exceptions and if I saw a Rangers football shirt, I knew I was in safe hands.
Rule of thumb as far as spotting friendly (or otherwise) taxi drivers was, if they were wearing hoops then that was exactly where they could stick their cabs.I bought a military watch. It didn't tell me the time, it told me to get my hair cut.

Re: Soldiers told not to use Belfast Black Taxi
I recall working at a certain PVCP and a bloke getting out of "black taxi" and showing F90 to very bored stagger.... when it was pointed out that he had got out of said black taxi (which was a reportable offence) he replied "its not black its a green one"....
Oh how we chuckled.
It was my understanding that the rules applied to all Hackney type cabs.
