So, Ed Ballbag, has let it out of the bag that education will be the first to suffer with a £2 Billion cut in funding. Whatever happened to the Blair principles of "Education, Education, Education"

Non of them seem to realise that the 1st question on the lips of everyone in the country is "if they can save this money now, why did they spend it in the 1st place?"

Even Balls is actually talking of cuting spending in 2 yars time, it should be cut today.

A good start in appraising the Education budget would be to analyse the cost of maintaining schools through PFI agreements.

Perhaps it is finally an admission that the vast majority of the money 'invested' in education has been wasted. Like the NHS, education is protected from reform by 'politics'. Both are seen as untouchable, because whatever you try to do to make them work properly is seized by the opposition as a tool to attack the incumbent party.

I have absolutely no doubt that you could cut £2Bn from education with no change to educational standards - pumping it in in the first place has made no difference. Yes, GCSE and A level results have soared, but that is devaluation not improvement - look at the number incapable of reading, writing or adding up. Slash all the 'citizenship' cobblers, all the lessons on the lovable, charming, romany folk as well as anything else that doesn't actually teach children anything. Give them the basics at school and they will be better equipped to become 'good citizens' and to fit into society. Keep wasting your time trying to 'teach' them into being good little socialists, but then sending them out unable to read or write is a short-cut to disenfranchisement, alienation and the creation of an underclass.

They know they won't get in next time so that is a hollow idea. It's just lip service as they'll never have to come up with the goods. All it will do is allow them (in opposition - assuming they get enough seats in the General Election) to claim that they thought of it first and that the Tories haven't the nous to follow it through. Win, win (they'd think) for a desperate party.

I reckon he should see where that money is needed rather than simply slash it, there's no way that schools are adaquately funded at the moment- let alone with that much less to spend. That said, a good place to start would be with the teachers. 99% are probably awesome & an asset to their schools, but at Uni I studied to be a primary teacher and I am not kidding, most of my cohort had trouble with maths and writing, let alone passing it on to the children. The entry requirements were you had to have at least 3 E's at A level, and then you could repeat the exams as many time as you wanted, as with the coursework so really you couldn't fail. As I said, most teachers do a fab job, but really- toughining up the training couldn't do that much harm!

Don't hold your breath expecting Quangos to be top of the cuts pile though

They could save a shedload of pennies scrapping the completely pointless, time wasting, money shredding sat tests. A competant teacher should be able to highlight any pupils who need extra help, or those who are brighter and need more stimulation without the need for the sat tests. The amount of pressure it puts on little ones is immense and unnessacary.

All that 12 years of Labour throwing a mountain of money at Education has achieved is kids that are on average less well educated than they were 12 years ago.

About 60% of kids still leave school without a single A-level yet it is government policy that 50% of kids should go into university level further education. Anyone see a flaw in this policy? Not Ed Balls obviously.

Maybe the Government should target the universities for cuts, but that would mean less students and their lecturers staying off the unemployment register.

The Governent also ignores the rather embarassing fact that many of the kids who actually go to Uni drop out within a year when they realise they just aint up to it.

Bliar and Cyclops have destroyed the education system - cutting £2 billion from it won't make any difference.

I wouldn't put it past these people to hit education, front-line medicine and policing with cuts deliberately as part of their scorched earth policy before the next election. How many "five-a-day coordinators" or their like are going to go, and will anyone with the word "outreach" in their job title be at risk?
