I's been on the ticker for a while - now lead story http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8245862.stm
Just saw it on the 1100 BBC News. I stand corrected.

Has it been confirmed as a soldier? Because the first reports mentioned a "Commando"/ Special Forces KIA, which made me think it might be SBS...

A tragic loss, whatever unit he belonged to.

Re: BREAKING NEW- "Commando" killed in hostage rescue

The problem is a loud mouth in Kabul who shot his mouth off to AP before kinforming was complete.

Once it was out it is very hard to keep a lid on things.

It is the reason we have minimise to try and protect the family.

Still, I'll bet someone feels really important having been 'used' as a source.

Edited to use the correct tense, add the bit about minimise and express my contempt.

What is even worse, and according to colleague reporters, is that apparently he wasnt in the hands of the Taliban, but in the hands of locals who were minded to hand him on to the Taliban, but were arranging for his release......

Whatever the story is, another British Serviceman has been killed. and while rescuing a piece of journalistic scum who appears to be a serial idiot, having become a "victim" of kidnapping on a previous occasion. The Journo will get his payment for his story (now incredibly enhanced by his "kidnapping"), and the soldiers family will get the body of a hero returned, and the Elizabeth Cross.

Sky News reporter describe the Journo as "very brave". Not anywhere near as brave as those who rescued him, and gave their lives for his freedom.

RIP, my thoughts are with the family of the Serviceman who gave his life so readily to rescue this utter piece of trash.

Has this journo written anything anti- military, as I heard on the radio over here that he has a UK and Eire passport.

I wouldn't know but I would like to think that he has the sensitivity not to do so in the future.

Agreed - though to be charitable it could have been an accidental leek. Op Minimise is an effective tool when used as it should be.

The use of the term 'commando' does unfortunately give a possible indication of the casualties unit.

There'll be a book in it, for sure.

Bobthedog sums it up perfectly for me, although Sky's description of the 'brave' reporter is a bit wide of the mark.
