ER why not move Parliament to a point on the Pennies between God's country & Yorkshire.
Be nice to think of all the improvements that would follow.
Must be some local old TA Barracks that could be done up to provide lodging.

I beg to differ, the Scots arent being subsidised as you so eloquently put it, having no natural industrial revenues of its own England leaches off Scottish oil, gas, water, mineral reserves..............who is subsidizing who?.

Scots downfall was being to greedy for devolution that they snapped at the first deal it was offered by Whitehall and in doing so shot its self up the arse and ended up being a puppet ( horrifically minging matchstick ) parliament with no real power.

Re: Alex Salmond - Independence referendum

    Salmond outlines independence plans

The Scottish government has published its white paper on Scotland's constitutional future, paving the way for an independence referendum.

First Minister Alex Salmond said Scotland must be independent to meet its full economic potential.

He also outlined a series of other options, including substantial new powers for the Scottish Parliament.

The minority SNP administration does not have enough support from opposition parties to stage a referendum in 2010.

The white paper, launched on St Andrew's Day, sets out independence as its favoured option.

Three other possible scenarios for Scotland's future are contained in the white paper: no change in the present set-up; more powers, as recommended by the Calman Commission review of devolution; and a major transfer of responsibilities from Westminster to Holyrood, such as full financial autonomy.

I couldn't agree more. The English handed over £47 billion via ths Barnett formula to Scotland alone last year.

if they choose anything other than total independence, do the english/welsh/ni get to vote whether to accept the deal as surely if they only keep financial (bailouts + access to two of the largest financial centres in europe) and military (obvious monetary bonuses over not increasing their defence bill etc) the taxpayer should have a say whether we want to provide this service to what would become a foreign nation?

That's rubbish. It's the oil companies that have taken Scotland for a ride not the English. Read up on the Barnett formula.

Re: Alex Salmond - Independence referendum

From an interview I heard with Salmond he said he wanted to keep the pound, the Union Flag, the Queen would be OK as well and wanted to be part of Europe. Now surely to be part of Europe Scotland as an independent nation would have to apply in its own right rather than being part of Europe on the shirt tails of England, Wales & N Ireland. They would also have to apply to be part of the Commonwealth, UN etc.

Passports would have to be issued, Scottish MPs sent home. Funding from Westminster cut off. Border closed to stop illegal immigrants as they would not be part of the EU therefore they would have to have visas to work in the remainder of the UK.
I don't care if you hate me, I don't live to fucking please you.

Re: Alex Salmond - Independence referendum

bomb_mac - you can have some of mine as well. Make sure you watch Braveheart and Whisky Galore. I understand Take the High Road is being repeated on Alba as well! That should just about set you up for independence. After that, Scotland are on their own.

And no your two 'big' clubs cannot play in the Premier League - start in Div Two and compete for promtion if you like!

If there is a referendum, will all parties affected get a vote? If it is for independence, can that please be true independence- no financial handouts from Westminster, Scottish economy has to survive on what it generates. No Scotsman can be PM again, nor can they hold office in British Govt. On those terms, I say yes to independence, good luck plucky Scots, thanks for the memories!

Sure there would need to be some sort of process of determining residency for Scots living in England - or permanent leave to remain (pay tax, but no vote for example) but that is all process. Perhaps all the Jocks who bang on about how wonderful Scotland is (while setting up home in Surrey) will want to go home?

Re: Alex Salmond - Independence referendum

I got as far as 'defence' before I couldn't be fucking arrsed with it.

This is not independance- this is about climbing out of bed with the UK and getting fucked in the arrse by europe. I cannot see one policy that does not involve bowing down to the 'Superstate' (designate) in one form or another.

If Shetland decides that it has had enough of Scotland will Salmon brains allow it to piss off to Norwegian control? Reason I ask is that a higher proportion of Shetlanders want independance from the Scots, than Scots wanting independance from the UK. On the same score there is dissenting voices in the Highlands that would quite like to see the back of the lowlands (fucking townies!) where does it end?

I voted no - no last time around and will vote no if it ever gets as far as a vote this time around. Much like nearly everyone else I know north of Glasgow/ Edinburgh.

Salmond ya wee cunt - get tae fuck!!!!

Agreed - any decision on Scottish independence will have a big effect on England, Wales and Northern Ireland, so any referendum has to be nation-wide - across the whole UK.
