Some capabilities should be considered as absolutely basic requirements and economics should not come into it.
If economics was the only driver we'd buy all our kit from the US - or China.

Re: British soldiers banned from using live bullets to save mone
Maybe, maybe some Bright Spark in MoD will decide to buy up all the old remaining Warsaw Pact 7.62 ammo to be issued to the Troops......??????
Or.... after each engagement with Mr Talib... all empty cases will be recovered and sent back to Blighty to be re-used.... whats the betting the back street arms dealers in Kabul or Pakistan could supply ammo to the NATO contingents. They probably pay Afghan and Pashtun tribesmen, women and kids to collect up as many empty cases they can find strewn around the countryside.

I cried a bit when I read that one. In my time, many centuries ago, I carried my own pistol (choice of Colt .45 auto or 9mm Browning) and, as I didn't like the stopping power of the SMG, my personal weapon was a P/Action shotgun, firing LG buckshot.
Of course, even earlier, it was normal for an officer to have to acquire his own revolver from Thos. Bland in London, just like Churchill did when he was in.
All are now illegal for an officer to purchase. How low has this country sunk, in pandering to the childish and stupid.

Bangety-Bang.... Tankety-Tank.....!!!
Would that be the 7.62mm x 39mm that doesn't fit our 7.62mm weapons or the 5.45m that doesn't fit our 5.56mm weapons?

The answer to that one, is that Belgium and Switzerland allow their citizens to fire ammo off for fun/target practice/keeping up their skills. When war is joined, the capacity reverts to the military; in peacetime, the civvies keep the ammo lines turning over and reduce the unit cost per round due to economies of scale.

Aha...
Do I detect a twitch on the old swingometer....
Actually Dave's lot were just as bad as the current bunch of clowns..
Regrettably we need to have a bit of a sea change in the balance of spending in the country; more hardnose and less largesse. Frankly some folks sense of priority need to be returned for re-calibration..
