Miliband - just hearing the word brings on my Tourettes.
We've had our fair share of party drones, incompetents, the occasionally deranged and the outright stupid fill the post of Foreign Secretary, but I'm hard-pressed to remember anyone who's damaged our international prestige the way this chap has simply through other countries assuming that he's the best we can do for the job.
We need people who look to the stars, holding the nation and the world in their hearts but at the same time we need down-to-earth people who can do serious and trying work.
In a definite sense, a country's power and prestige isn't only a reflection of its economic power but also a reflection of its people's quality and morality. Moreover, I think the latter is actually more important in the long-term.
It's different nowadays of course because while not all muslims are terrorists effectively all terrorists are muslims
ETA?
As for the terrorist vs freedom fighter debate, legitimacy of the cause must play a part. However, more important is surely discrimination in the choice of target. Though this is probably where at least part of the distinction between terrorism and guerilla tactics begins.
Interesting subject (i.e. terrorism, guerilla warfare, counterinsurgency etc...) and one that we, as the Army, could do with knowing a great deal about. Of course, that knowledge is only truly useful if it is evident at all levels. Most importantly the political level.
Those who bear too great a difference between their wise men and their soldiers will have their thinking done by cowards and their fighting done by fools....
I met Mr M on one of his trips abroad, and he is, personally, a very nice, able, and polite chap. Then again, Hitler was good with animals, and Joseph Stalin was a great philanthropist (this last bit is not true).
It's always been a problem of the left to consider terrorists as freedom fighters, mainly because so many of them are indeed lefties themselves- or at least claim to be (like the PIRA, ANC, etc). The right are no better really - think of the Contras in Nicaragua - but don't have so many to chose from.
A quick think reveals a list of terrorists (or, as I prefer to think of them, murderers) who went on to political success:
Bishop Makarios*
Jomo Kenyatta*
Menachim Begin*
Yitzhak Rabin*
Yasser Arafat
Gerry Adams*
Martin McGuinness*
Joe Stalin
Nelson Mandela
Robert Mugabe
George Washington*
Eamon De Valera*
(Those with asterisks were involved in killing British Forces)
This is off the top of my head - and I am sure there are many, many more. As noted earlier, one mans' terrorist is another man's freedom fighter....... The one thing this lot have in common is that they participated, planned, or supported, the deaths of innocent people for a political cause. Who will be next on the list? My betting is on a certain Mr O. Bin Laden................

One hell of a leftie, he was. (Spent time in jail for his terrorist crimes)
Another infamous terrorist lefty of course was Ulrike Meinhof of the Baader Meinhof Gang aka The Red Army Faction.
The ignorance of our leaders never ceases to amaze me, but then, When I pointed out at a civic function ,to my MP, that the man( Nelson Mandala) they were making a freeman of the city was in fact a convicted terrorist, she went balistic, and I have never been invited again
You made my week Tropper.
I often think that. Must p1ss Gerry Adams RIGHT off that Nelson gets statues and a Specials song - Gerry gets bugged cars and constantly has to deny his associates.
Don't hold your breath mate.Stand by for the Mc Guinness/Adams block of flats in some shoithole. :(
I can imagine. Just off Bobby Sands Avenue
At least Bobby "slimmer of the year" Sands wasn't an Army Tout like Adams & Mcguinness
