House of Lords: largely conservative, but because there by an accident of birth can be fiercely independent & therefore act as a brake on the excesses of the Governing party.

Tories: Business people & landowners who had done something productive & probably had some experience of leading others.

Labour (bear with me here): Proper working people who have worked their way up & have some experience of leadership & who by dint of education & sponsorship by the Unions represent the interests of their own communities.

All: have a desire to serve the nation, not themselves.
I think you've hit upon a key point there.

I've often thought that the Monarchy could help to fill this role, if only the balance of power was shifted in their direction. They are wealthy enough that corruption is unlikely, and need not worry about re-election.

I'm not proposing a dictatorship by any means, but if the Government were forced to explain any and all proposals to 'the Boss' for (genuine, not ceremonial) approval, it would be one more safeguard against the situation we're currently in.

Not that politics was entirely clean then, consider Lloyd-George & the Marconi scandal or the sold peerages.
The world and events have moved on from those days though.

You would not expect a company to be sucessful in the 21st century while running a one hundred year old business model would you?

    Worth a look

Dont get me wrong,I am a Royalist through and through.

But why should Government be ultimately accountable to an unelected head of state?

You need to remember that you,as a voter and a taxpayer, are the one that Government,at all levels, should be accountable to.

I read your link yesterday with great interest, but am too tight to pay for the download/book at the moment. There's certainly a lot of sense in it.
To eat well in England one must have breakfast three times a day

London: its "buzz" and "vibrancy"... can be codewords for drugs, late-night noise and multi-culturalism run (literally) riot.

Fair enough,it is POETS today and the beer gardens are calling.

If you trawl his blog a lot of the main ideas are there anyway.Really ,really interesting stuff.

I am on a bit of a crusade with it at the moment as every single gripe I am seeing on ARRSE can be dealt with if 'The Plan' was adopted as tory manifesto.Or indeed any parties manifesto.

Britain transformed into a state that could be the envy of the world in just 12 months and no need for a guillotine in picadilly circus either.

    It is brilliantly British.

IIRC someone suggested US Senators should be paid more so they wouldn't be tempted by corruption.

Someone wiser than me pointed out that by that logic, bank robbers weren't criminals, just underpaid

for the primary purpose of all government agencies is now the employment of their employees
    That is, frankly, testicles.

Why are you linking that PDF to the Blog?

I could as well link a Tom Harris article to the UK communist parties manifesto.

Hannan suggests that quangos are subjected to open scrutiny by democratically elected representitives,to plead their case for further funding. If they cannot demonstate how resources are used to the benefit of the taxpayer then they will be chopped.

The general public would have the ability to veto a decision made by their representitives should relevant numbers register their disapproval.

If the public want somthing they can say so,and accept paying for it.But no more trough.

    All very democratic.

Should you wish to debate the merits of 'The Plan' you know where the thread is.

To bring things back on track lets have a recap of where we are with the troughing wretches of our political system.

Brown And Cabinet In The Expenses Firing Line

Videos of Labour ministers feeble attempts at damage limitation.

And finally Guidos guide to expenses lies.

As he has pointed out the rest of parliment are being very quiet about it today.

    They are all at it.
