Back to the Gurkha ...
Interesting to see Dominic Lawson string a few words together on this - having whored himself and his thoughts around any newspaper that will have him throughout his working life, I can only conclude that instead of moving into journalism, he should have sworn the oath and actually completed some service alongside those he is so happy to berate.
Joanna was on the Andrew Marr show today waving a ceramonial Kukrai about, which she was gave last week, missed her piece tho but the Liebour pr@ on the sofa with her looked a bit uneasy.
She's just gotten back from Mexico as well.

Spike... is your keyboard rebelling?
Not only did the fragrant Ms Lumley grace the sofa and unsheath a stunningly crafted Kukri; she took our eyes off another painful interview by the appropriately named Andrew Marr.
"As we moved slowly through the outskirts of the town we passed row after row of little grey slum houses running at right angles to the embankment. At the back of one of the houses a young woman was kneeling on the stones, poking a stick up the leaden waste-pipe which ran from the sink inside and which I suppose was blocked. I had time to see everything about her - her sacking apron, her clumsy clogs, her arms reddened by the cold. She looked up as the train passed, and I was almost near enough to catch her eye."

Only since the cat knocked over a glass of beer over it!Now I can only use A,SD,F,K, & L by the on screen one....
Just to prove how 'caring', 'how much they listen', 'how much they learn', the government is now distinguishing itself over the treatment of Iraqi 'helpers' and their bid to come to Britain rather than face 'execution' by the sh*t still swilling about in Iraq.
So proud to be British; so ashamed of the British government.
Lawson's piece is typical of 'So What' journalism......the built-in sneer that has infected this country's news coverage across all sorts of media for so long.
Nothing to say about the Gurkha issue except
' Bloody well done Joanna .....AND the Lib Dems'
Anyone, regardless of their origins, who 'grabs a gat and stags on ' deserves our respect......and the idea of subsequently denying them the right to remain is fatuous.
After a quick e-mail to my local MP I got the following reply in the post today:
Thank you for your e-mail regarding settlement rights for Gurkhas.
Following the action taken by the Government since 1997 to give Gurkhas equal pay an pensions, it is important that Ministers now listen to the strength of public support on the issue of resettlement rights.
It is important that Government respects the will of the House - but we need to get the policies right. There will be cost implications and we need to ensure that in changing the rules we do not set precedents with regard to future decisions on other immigration categories. Ministers have, however, promised to come forward with urgent proposals for the next stage of reform of the rules regarding Gurkha settlement in the UK before the Summer recess.
The date for determination of outstanding application from Gurkhas to remain in the UK has been brought forward to the end of May and the Minister has confirmed that he cannot foresee any circumstances in which ex-Gurkhas would ever be removed from the UK. Please find enclosed a statement from the Immigration Minister Phil Woolas which explains the current situation in more detail. Do not hesitate to contact me again if you feel that I can help you with this or any other matter.
Yours Sincerely
I'll type up the letter from Phil Woolas shortly.
From reading the letter today I see a couple of interesting points.
1) "it is important that Ministers now listen to the strength of public support on the issue of resettlement rights" - my local Labour MP wasn't part of the backbenchers who backed the Lib Dem motion!
2) "There will be cost implications and we need to ensure that in changing the rules we do not set precedents with regard to future decisions on other immigration categories." - Perhaps they can take the money out of foreign aid?

Well at least you have a reply, my emial to Gordon, my MP, has not yet been answered yet, and I have some what given up hope any way of a reply. He has probably guessed after my note about him claiming for a second home whilst I had been paying for him to live in downing street for 12 years that my vote is probably lost to him and his party.
