As FM says. Have heard Canadian whiskies are good. Tried a few and all were ok, pretty good.

as someone said earlier midleton is quite nice, pricey though.
I have heard it said that the only mixer you could use would be the same water that was used to make the whisky in the first place. The American "Burbon and branch" idea.

Now if this has any basis in fact or even tradition (or maybe it is time to start another one) then why don't the distilleries bottle the "famous peat bog water" or whatever the claim is and sell it alongside the bottles of whisky?

Sounds like a winner to me and I want 10% of the profit if any of them take it up.

Colonial said "but some have caramel added to give it a darker colour!" Not "some" , just about all. Its the way they make sure that the final product on the shelf looks the same, batch after batch. Take the darkest possible colour that its likely to be and add caramel ( burnt sugar) to anything less dark until it matches.

Even that does not mean the unscrupulous landlord has not filled the Grouse bottle with Aldis cheapest. An attempt to stop refilling is why the bottles you'll see around the Med. have a plastic one-way valve arrangement in the neck.

I must admit I never heard the term "bourbon and branch" before...but I just googled it, and I realised that unbeknowing to me it's the rule I always followed. clean water only,..mixers only kill the whisky and its what gives you the sore head.
