It's hard to stay warm when you're cold. It's even harder to stay cold when you're warm.

You wake up and it's cold outside (Or you already are outside!) and so you make a judgement call on sticking on a base layer before you go out for your run / walk / hike / patrol. Perhaps with the first three options, it's not going to too big a problem if you decide to up the pace and want to pause and take off that base layer. ...

The Kojak is made from New Zealand Merino wool; it punches well above its weight of 30g with regards to keeping your bonce cosy. I may gush a bit here, so please forgive me. This is my new favourite hat. It follows in a long line of new favourites but this is definitely the best yet.

Like all of the items for sale from Armadillo Merino these Boxers are sold as fire retardant, having UV protection and being anti-static. I saw fire retardant and thought of nomex and materials like that and must admit to wondering how comfy they would be as active underwear. Well I should not have worried, as if I hadn't read it on their site, I would not have known it. These boxers look and feel like a good quality pair of normal day to day under shorts. These companies have started making fire retardant layers as the synthetic ones have been known to melt to the wearer if things go bad. ...

The Armadillo Cougar is a part of Armadillo Merino's Big Cat range of semi-fit base layers. According to the website these garments are designed to have the fit and feel of your favourite t-shirt. I was lucky enough to receive mine in time to take it on an exercise in Germany, In January. I am glad that I received the semi-fit type as some body shapes, like mine, are not for showing off in skin tight clothing, as my kids keep reminding me. ...

The company Mountain Warehouse was founded in 1997 and has the reputation of offering quality items at lower prices. Mountain Warehouse state they offer unbeatable value for money, quality products and many of their products are sourced from the same factories as well-known brands, but because they sell direct to the public, they offer prices up to 50% lower than equivalent products within the marketplace.

The Jacket up for review is the men’s 'Nebo' fully waterproof jacket in the Mountainlife Extreme range. First impression out of the bag is the weight and length. It’s lightweight and simply styled with some colour way detailing to lift the look of the jacket. I would class this as a short jacket that finishes at the hips. The material also feels like a good quality to the touch. ...

Anyone that's ever bought a bit of civilian kit to take on Ops or Exercise with them will be more than aware of the cross-over between tactical and civilian kit. What works well in Afghan might work equally well in some agricultural forest in the UK and what works well in the Arctic might work just as well at 2am on Salisbury Plains during a chanking cluster of an exercise!

Brynje of Norway is a company that specialises in arctic warm kit for adventurers, explorers, athletes and all of that means that their gear is potentially well suited to a military adaptation as well. With a broad selection of base layers, underwear and other garments you can stick on under your kit Brynje have potentially found the holy grail of warm kit that doesn't make you sweat buckets when it gets, well, warm! ...

As those of you that have already experienced the Brynje Super Thermo range or read the reviews on this site you'll know by now that there does appear to be an alternative solution to those solid offerings from the likes of Helly Hansen and Under Armour. It appears that the more holes you have in your clothing the warmer and drier it'll keep you. Having said that, looking at the state of some of my socks after exercise I don't think it necessarily applies to everything! ...

Feet are a bit of a pain in the backside at times. Whilst they're handy for walking on and stablising you when you stand up, they're also a great way to pass ten minutes by picking the fluff from between the toes or picking (Or biting if you're so inclined and capable) at the nails. From a soldiers point of view they're also a great way to go man down on Operations or Exercise thanks to the fun and giggles brought on by trench foot, frostbite or numerous other conditions an ailments that can befall a soldier in the field. ...
