I was massively excited when I received the Stratosphere. I had read that it was lightweight, easy to use and it looked cool. This is what I discovered.

      Carriage:

When I first tore open the parcel I thought I must have been sent the wrong item. It felt far too light! When packed, the Stratosphere is the same size as an issue 3/4 length issue sleeping mat when it is rolled into it’s bag, hardly any bigger than an issue bivi bag, though you due to the poles it needs to be packed with a little more care. It weighs a kilo, the same as an issue water bottle. ...

First - the caveats: I'm only using this as a CFAV, my boss gave/issued me this webbing, my last experience with webbing was near 20yrs ago, and I'm a self confessed gear whore!

So, on to the webbing. This the Marauder SAS/Para MTP Webbing available from Britkit for £94.95 I've no idea what makes it SAS/PAra... that's their label. ...

I am just getting ready to pack to my kit for another Op Tour to Afg. On my previous tour (H13) I took my webbing with me (a mixture of PLCE and tailored bits from Dixie's Corner). I ended up spending the first 5 months living out of a Jackal so the webbing became redunant. The times I did use it I made the mistake of overloading on ammo. I probably had enough ammo to single-handedly win the Battle of Roarkes Drift! Towards the end of the tour, I moved to NES(N) but had already backloaded my webbing to BSN. Big mistake! I was now on foot and felt vunberable with all my kit on my daysack. ...

As always in the British army, there is a huge debate about whether you should buy non-issue kit or stick with the stuff from the QMs. Whilst this debate is pretty much settled for PPE (issue only) and warm kit (non-issue unless you're suicidal) it becomes very heated when talking about high-cost bits of kit like webbing. If you do choose to buy custom webbing, there are a number of suppliers who seem popular: Dragon Supplies, Dixie's corner and Jay-Jays all provide tailored webbing sets at around the £200 mark. One supplier that you won't often hear about is Boris3098 (of ARRSE fame). He has no website and works by word of mouth alone, but I noticed a number of VERY positive comments about his work on ARRSE and decided to get my webbing from him. ...

I suspect that most people have heard of Mountain Warehouse as they have been around for a few years now after their launch in 1997 and they have their own branded equipment (Mountainlife) ranging from socks through to ski clothing. I have tested the Mountainlife 50L backpack that only comes in one colour (dark olive green) and a stated capacity of 50 litres.

My first view of the backpack is that it is well made and has most of the usual gubbins that you would expect of a backpack of this size, including air mesh padding to the back of the bag, shoulder straps and on the hip belts all of which weighs in at 1 kg. That said however, this backpack is one of those that falls into the category of a single bag backpack, so unlike other backpacks, it is scant on pockets or dividers so is more aimed at those who like the big space and is happy to go rummaging through the bag looking for items rather than placing them into set pockets. ...

Many of us own net books and tablets these days for their practicality and ease of carriage, however this brings problems as we then have to protect our investments whilst in transit. Now this may just be the daily commute on the tube or the odd flight from London to New York, but there are others of us that take this to the extremes where the daily commute could be a trip through the jungle or a CH47 flight to a dusty FOB in the Afghan badlands. Most people have heard of PELI before a company famous for its extremely durable storage solutions so it will come as no big surprise that they have developed a case for just the purpose I described above. ...

Most readers will be familiar with BCB. They are one of the bigger suppliers of military and survival and protective kit. Amongst other things they have a number of first aid and medical products of which the Military FAK is one.

The FAK comes in a zipped DPM pouch that opens to reveal to halves that with zip closures that contain the kit. There is also a clip so that it can be hung up like a wash bag. It's about 18cm x 12cm x 10cm (7" x 5" x 4")in size when closed. The kit consists of: ...

We all know what it's like out in Afghan when you want a nice, cool, refreshing drink of water. You're either a REMF and go and get yourself a nice, cool, refreshing drink of water from the fridge or you're boots on the ground and you're left with a Bastion brick that's probably been crushed, stood on and dragged through the sand and has passed boiling point at least three times since you stuck it in your daysack at 5am before you went out on patrol; drinking it is as much fun as going to a paint factory and being shown rows upon rows of paint before finally enjoying their two hour Powerpoint presentation (With guest speakers) of paint drying. ...
