Once again Robert Goddard leads us into a story with so many angles, twists and turns that you have to keep awake as his characters come to life on the pages.
In 2010 Jonathan Kellaway, a senior mining company executive, is tasked, just before his retirement, with solving a puzzle that started years before. What has happened to a stack of documents, belonging to an old China Clay Company, that have disappeared. These documents are necessary for an Historian to write a history of the Multi-national Company that this tale is about. It is Jonothans job to find the answers. The story takes us between Cornwall, the USA and the Italian Island of Capri, and there are secrets to be learned as he travels around.
In 1959 a mans body is found in his car at the end of a track, the engine running and a pipe leading into the car from the exhaust. In the boot of the car his 7 year old son, alive, just. What happened to that man and the boy that was left behind? Why the apparent suicide?
The story is told as flashbacks to the past. The story, proper, begins in a small China Clay Company in St Austell, Cornwall in 1968. Rumours of take overs by larger companies start the ball rolling. It is here, at this point, that Jonothan Kellaway starts on his journey in search of the documents that have mysteriously gone missing. Why would anyone want to steal old documents dated back to the 60’s?
Suicides, murder, kidnapping, romance and deceit and a host of intrigues beset our hero as he tries to uncover the mystery. Getting involved with the Naples Camorro, the local mafia guys, doesn’t make things easy either. Even a side trip into the happenings in Italy during the 2nd WW fit neatly into the narrative.
International Business, stacks of money and luxury lifestyles are all mixed up together to make a page turner of a read.
I give this book 3 mushroom heads.
