Jonathan Quinn is a Cleaner. Not your average cleaner, no bottle of Mr Muscle, no electric bumper and handful of rags. Quinn is a specialist. The one that people go to when they want a body removed.
Quinn and his apprentice, Nate, are experts in getting rid of dead bodies without awkward questions being asked. They are the go to people for those that cause the bodies. Discreet, effective and also deadly.
They work for shadowy organisations, briefed by people usually named 'Smith' who are willing to pay their price, yet Quinn is moralistic too, and only works for those that he percieves to friendly to his country and cause.
A straightforward job goes wrong, someone is there who should not have been, watching. The next job on the list - part of the same contract - goes badly wrong when a third party begins creating their own bodies, and then Quinn finds that people are asking about him. Enquiries are being made and his family - especially his sister with whom he has had for many years a strained relationship - are in grave danger. He must act and act fast.
Ok, apart from the author having possibly the most macho name in writing, this is actually quite a good book. It's not a major new work of literature, but it is entertaining and exciting. I have read one of Mr Battles books before, the first one about his eponymous hero, and rather liked it. This one differs not greatly, but then I would have been diappointed if it been a brooding Gothic romance or a novel about the struggles of a penniless artist. No, it was what I expected and I was not disappointed.
We tend to buy books that we like, rather than what we think we should read, so I would have bought this. It is a thriller with plenty of thrills, it is what is popularly called a 'page turner'. As opposed to what? I wonder. A book that doesn't have pages that turn? Pointless, that would be!
I liked this book and read it fairly quickly, which is always a good sign. I will seek out other books by the same author ( despite his name) and read them. And enjoy them.
A good holiday read, easy to follow and easy to enjoy. Buy it. I would.
