This is a short piece of fiction from one of our own members of ARRSE. It’s not long enough to be a novel but it’s just a bit longer that a short story, I believe the technical term would be novella. As such I shall keep the review short!

The story line is told over two intermixed time lines with one occurring in the Western Desert in 1942 and the in Europe in 1985.


Chuck tells a very intricate story, with lots of detail and for those of a less knowledgeable mind he has thoughtfully included a glossary at the end.

As it is a novella, I don’t want to give too much away but suffice to say I found it well written and if anything just a bit too short, I wanted to know more about how the characters got to where they were at the events described and what happed to them afterwards. Though again there is a brief cast list complete with some details as to who survived the war and who did not.

Despite it only being a novella, the main characters are developed well and the tense situation they are embroiled in the desert is well described as is the emotive element of the later events in Europe.
