So long F-35? Even the Yanks are finding it expensive

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Not technically true… the UK was invited to buy the beastie back in the day but we politely declined, but we do have a rather special relationship with them with their high end stuff.

  2. Sea Typhoon was a navel gazing exercise that came to the conclusion it wasn't really doable without a complete redesign of the basic aircraft, new wing box and wing for starters.

If the F-35 falls flat, the F/A-18E was 2nd dickie in the downselect.

  3. Nope, it's just your naval aircraft are somewhat inferior… designed with an eye to export markets rather than Tier 1 hard power warfighting.

Are the QE class carriers big enough for the F18?
  5. Yes, no problem. All they would need is cats and traps and off you go.

If you look back at the early design studies, some of them show F/A-18's ranged on the deck when they were still debating what to fly off them.

  9. We dont speak about that
  10. A chance to fire exocet into French Navy vessels?

  11. Well, when we locked up a B-2 with a Rapier at Farnborough, the dummy spitting by the USAF top knob had to be seen to be believed. :p

Funny that, French submarines suck but still they sell, including to a former british colony, namely India....oh well, I am sure you know better...not to mention that India is also interested in the Rafale M...

I remember that one, though it was at Fairford! I was at Honington at the time, though not directly involved in that event. It was a bit of a cheat by both parties though. The B2 flew straight and level down the centre-line of the runway at low level (not what it's designed to do). We used the pointing stick to alarm onto it because we weren't allowed to use the surveillance radar and used the thermal imager to auto-track it. Made a lovely video for Waste-of-Space and, as you say, it was great to see the Americans spitting the dummy out. "It wasn't in stealth mode"... Oh really!

We've had FSC alarm onto and track F-117s though, and burners on hot-air balloons, and birds, and...

Editted, cos I really should read the first post properly! :pissedoff:
  15. India buys cheap and cheerful SSK's, we don't do cheap, we only do top notch SSN's and we don't sell them and unlike French ones, our subs don't come with a pop up white flag… :D
