Springtime is an extraordinary book, quite unlike anything that I have ever read before. It is a short ghost story beautifully presented in hardback, the chapters are divided by simple but lovely pieces of artwork.
This book is about as far from my comfort zone that I have ever strayed in the literary world but I am so glad that I got the chance. De Kretser writes using such eloquently descriptive language that that reading the story felt more like watching a film. A remarkable effect.
Set in modern day Sydney, the characters are so well introduced that you feel comfortable with them immediately. The whole neighbourhood is bought to life, and the atmosphere of the city is captured perfectly. This is not a “Horror“ story but something all together gentler and more sophisticated.
My only criticism is that I heartily wished that it was longer. a wonderful read.
