Vampire, I am inclined to agree. On single carriageway roads, a common speed limit for all vehicles would mean less congestion, delays and, most importantly for safety, overtaking.

But that is not what the law says and the different speed limits applicable are a very clear argument against policing by speed camera.

Cloudbuster, a placard in the cab is a good idea but should not be neccessary. Professional drivers and HGV drivers in particular have no excuse for not knowing the relevant speed limits.

I was aware of the limits for the vehicle(s) I drive, but wasn't aware HGVs were limited to 40 in single carriageways, I always thought it was 60+. Do the Police ever enforce the 40 limit?

See my comments about speed cameras. When was the last time you saw a traffic cop enforcing speed limits.

Bloke, I couldn't agree more. However, if commercial vehicles were required by Law to carry placarded speed restrictions, how much easier would it be for PC Plod and the Prosecutors to collect revenue?

Yes it has always been a 60mph maximum for caravans. To be quite honest, I don't think you want to go any faster when towing a caravan anyway. If it suddenly starts rocking from side to side at speed, you could be right in trouble.

My rape va.. I mean motorhome is difficult enough to get upto 50mph let alone any faster, we could solve speeding if everyone had to drive vehicles with drastically underpowered engines (also ban turbos and superchargers)

My grey import bike (japanese home market import) had annoying little lights that lit up to let you know which speed limit you had just broken. It was handy to know that on the M1 I was exceeding all japanese speed limits. I was going to joke about needing such devices fitting in the UK (which of course would require another new law or 20) but won't just in case anyone takes it seriously.

RGJ Bloke, A few years ago I saw exactly that. A caravan being towed at more than 70 started swinging and ended up dragging its car back and forth across all 3 lanes of a motorway before finally flipping and "exploding".

I am always very cautious when passing caravans travelling at speed and prefer to get past as fast as possible and leaving as much gap as possible.
