I've got an old Jeep Cherokee; not great MPG (25-30), but cheap to buy, comfortable on road and capable off it.

Say goodbye to radiator problems, faulty central locking and stuck window mechanisms.

So, a TA battalion or nine Regular Guards battalions? Not a difficult choice, then (especially as we don't have nine Regular Guards battalions).

Discovery 300TDi..ran mine on chip fat/veg oil/home made biodiesel...no modifications to the engine at all.

Comfortable, commanding driving position, great on and off road and good access to the rear.... and great for towing boats/horse boxes.

As said, Suburu Forrester/Outback and even 5 door Impreza are favourites with the famers round here.

An off the cuff suggestion, a Skoda Octavia 4x4...supprisingly good, and cheap!

Everything else has far too much plastic trim that gets damaged!

Oh..a few cheap Freelanders about now...dont get a petrol, but the diesels are good, if main dealer serviced.

Lada Niva - the poor man's Range Rover. Had a couple in Africa. Much more comfortable than a Defender and practically bombproof.
Brigadier Bill Aldridge, commander of British forces in the South Atlantic, responded by saying: ‘I am not expecting to hand the islands over to anybody and therefore put us in a position to have to retake the islands.’

Lada Niva Cossak! Honestly, they are robust, simple and good off road, if not so good on road.
