Remember the block heater is to keep the oil fluid in the sump so it doesn't cause too much pressure on the engine. LPG is different as the gas itself is effected by low temperatures

It will solve his problem. The LPG vaporiser is heated by the engines coolant to prvent icing. Having the coolant pre-warmed by his block heater will be sufficient to avoid the vaporiser icing problem that makes Iron Duke's Jaguar a pain on a frosty morning.

Cheers jagman. Thats what I thought. Havent tried it yet cos its wet but not cold.

And thanks for the advice chaps. In return I'll tell you an alarming but handy trick to start a freezing deisel that I learned in a cold place. This works, but maybe dont teach it to children.

Wrap a rag around a fence post. Dip it in deisel/kerosine. Remove the air filter. Light the rag. Hold the burning rag over the air intake. Turn the engine. It'll start on a hand crank.

[QUOTE=paralog;3485146]Block heaters are not to keep the oil from solidifying but to keep some heat in the coolant (it is mounted in a coolant plug in the block. You have to use the correct grade of oil to stop is turning into jelly, which I have seen with 10w30, alberta vehicles use 5w40 in the winter I h lived in Edmonton and have started vehicles at -40c. The best in fact was a Lada Niva that would start on first go after sitting out all night at -40c. It was bastard to steer as the steering froze up and the seat were like park benches they were froze that hard.

Hate to be a pedant, but most are not. I agree there are types of block heater which replace a core plug and do this very thing, however, the quick to fit, cheaper option is a heat pad that is glued to the sump (Oil Pan) and plug into the mains. Obviously both will aid cold starting but the latter wont help LPG cold start.
I believe a company called Kenlow used to do water jacket heaters in the UK

When I had a Perkins 4203 in my Series Landy, a plumbers blowlamp did this , but more convienient and cleaner

While you're at it, install an 'in car heater' as well. Keeps you from having to adjust all the mirrors when you hop in first thing, and also prevents your cheeks from freezing to the seat.

It fits in the block where that big screw is where you are supposed to drain the block and where they pour the sand out when they cast it. Aside from easier starting, it'll pay for itself before long. The first few miles from cold and you can watch your average miles per gallon dropping at an alarming rate.

Dont need a cabin heater because it doesnt get that cold over here. The cars got heated seats which the wife uses but I dont on account of it feels like you have wet yourself.
