Poor Bloody Infantry 1939-1945 by Charles Whiting. Deals primarily with British/Commonwealth and US infantry experiences. It is enough to make you want to join the RLC.

Andrew Salmon's two books on the Korean War are also top notch. 'To the Last Round' dealing with the stand at Imjin River and 'Scorced Earth, Black Snow' about the first British/Commonwealth troops sent there.

    Best War Book

    Killing Rommel by Steven Pressfield

Historical fiction based on the memoirs of an RAC officer turned Long range Desert Group, in the north African campaign.

Brings home the grittiness and realism of how a real soldier thinks.

    Outstanding!!!

I can't remember the authors name but I read a book called Rifleman earlier this year, the author joined pre WW2 and fought through north Africa and Italy before joining the para's and getting captured at Arnhem, he then escapes from his pow camp gets captured, sentenced to death only to escape in the Dresden bombing then joining the Russians.
It doesn't end there cos after the war when on biking holidays he does up spying for his country and has quite a roll in the fall of the iron curtains.
I have not told you all here.
