    I never questionned his use of a pseudonym nor disagree with it, the bloke dug out blind throughout his service, he can do what he wants.

    Only in the UK can a former special forces soldier with an MM and a DCM be described as this;

    andy mcnab or 'Steve Mitchell' as he really is called was blacklisted by the sas. all his former troops in his squad lost respect for him and none of them want nothing to do with him due to the lies and backstabbing he was responsible for. I think one of them actually threatened his life if he ever returned to the barracks but that could be hearsay. However he always likes to be the silouette in the sun newspaper or have his face blacked out when involved with pictures, this all adds to the mystery and the thought of "oh he's not allowed to show his face, because he's ex special forces." well Chris Ryan shows his face everywhere and even made a camero in ultimate force series 1. Andy doesn't like to show his face because he has pissed off a lot of people and doesnt want them knocking on his door, the sun gave him a job with a fancy title of the sun's security expert, they paint him out to be a hero, but he really isn't.

    I thought the one about decorating was excellent, obviously can't go into too much detail about it in a public forum. Apart from that the rest of them are alright if you want to waste a couple of hours.

    With respect to you and THEM, I have to say I would not have written Bravo Two Zero if I had had any leadership position in the ill-fated patrol that spawned such bravery.

    While I realize from experience that the best patrol plan becomes outdated the nanosecond one departs the wire, the screw-ups in planning, supply, patrol prep (no cold weather clothing!), rehearsal (was there even one?) etc. etc. make the ensuing heroism appear a bit needless. IMHO the failures on the front end of the op were of the sort one would expect from cadets in their first field exercise rather than THEM and the short-fused warning order is no excuse. It also shows the universal tendency of elite forces to push for missions even when ill-prepared for them.

    It is at such times that adult leadership is required to say "no" or "not until you are mission ready" rather than being pushed over by the specops "halo" that causes commanders above the operational unit to cower or assume more capability than is warranted under the circumstances. It is not as if there were not other (very) special forces readily available at the time (I happen to know as I was then located in the Intell/Recon Fusion Cell of the First Marine Expeditionary Force and heard and watched the message traffic regarding the op real time).

    As to your last point one need look no further than this thread--unless there really are people actually whose identity disks include Fallschirmjaeger, Dollsteeth, Nato Standard 123 etc.
