J D Salinger pops his clogs...
J D Salinger
Famous, perhaps, for not being famous, even though he wrote one of the world's most famous books "Catcher in the Rye".
And, yes, I have read the book!

Never read any of his stuff.
Hermit of the first water, but he did wear the green.
He saw combat with the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. He was active at Utah Beach on D-Day and in the Battle of the Bulge. wiki link
Fair Play.
RIP

Pretty sure he was involved in liberating a few concentration camps, he had a nervous breakdown because of what he witnessed doing it.

'Six Degrees of Mervyn Peake'; apparently the same thing happened to Peake (and possibly many others, I wouldn't be surprised) I'm not sure that Peake had much to come and go on in the first place, though.

The passing of a legend. Inevitable, but a shame nonetheless.
Timing is everything. If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. If you're late, you're fucked.
