Because I'm busy, I'll try that B-17/B-24 hybrid.

Something to do with aerodynamic efficiency, IIRC.

    Agree with the the ID.

The rationale was that the B-24 had limited space in the nose, particularly in those versions fitted with a nose turret; some bright spark came up with the idea of grafting a B-17G nose onto the aircraft, since this provided both additional room and potentially additional forward-firing guns since you could have two further .5-in weapons in the 'cheek' windows if required. There was also some thought that a different nose would improve performance.

When tested, although the aircraft was faster, the lengthened nose caused some problems. Also, the hybrid couldn't get to the same altitude as the standard B-24 and there were problems with engine temperature (although several test pilots later noted that since some standard B-24Js turned out to have similar problems this was probably nothing to do with the new nose design).

Didn't last long at all, and thank you Archi for the additional historical tidbits.

Like anything, its easy if you know the answer

Though I expect a quick answer for this one!
"Scholars, of course, won’t have it so. Policies they say, and the subtly laid schemes of statesmen, are what influences the destinies of nations; the opinions of intellectuals, the writings of philosophers, settle the fate of mankind. Well, they may do their share, but in my experience the course of history is as often settled by someone having a belly-ache, or not sleeping well, or a sailor getting drunk, or some aristocratic harlot waggling her backside."
