Wounded Digger Tied Himself to Vehicle and Fought On...
Discuss Wounded Digger Tied Himself to Vehicle and Fought On... in Australia on The Army Rumour Service; Nails my arse.
He was just frightened of being left behind 'cos he knew all his mates were jack cnuts who'd leg it from Billy No Mates at the first given.
Was he shot in ...

Re: Wounded Digger Tied Himself to Vehicle and Fought On...
Am I the only one having visions of him sat there oblivious to all the incoming whilst weighing up the various merits of a granny knot as opposed to a double bow? Whatever award he may get, it's well deserved.
Re: Wounded Digger Tied Himself to Vehicle and Fought On...
This was the same 2 Sep 08 ambush as the one for which Trooper Donaldson was awarded the VC for Australia recently.
Apparently rumour has it that this guy was the patrol commander and was actually shot in the leg and through the hips, not the upper body.
No more info has come out about this incident, but considering a VC was awarded, I expect more info will be gradually released.
Probably a book and a movie with Russel Crowe and Hugh Jackman!
So far the only decorations publicised have been the VC and a medal of Gallantry to a LCPL.
No indication whether this guy got any award. The Australians announce decorations on the Queens Birthday in early June, so maybe more awards will be made public (albeit with no real names.) then.

Apparently there was no rope. He just wedged himself between the bullbar and grille of the Humvee. Due to his hip and leg wounds he wasn't able to climb up onto the back of the vehicle.
As the patrol Commander, he may have been the last to get on the vehicle after checking his boys were good to go.

I heard on the ADF grapevine that several blokes have been recommended for this action. This bloke was the commander and a SGT, so he would have probably have been the one who recommended his more junior blokes. There was no officer or higher rank on the ground to recommend him.
The VC and MG for this action were 'immediate' awards and were announced just before and on 26th Jan, Australia day. The other day for announcing honours is the Queens birthday in early june. So maybe more awards will be given out then.

Thanks for that, but I thought the rule regarding an officer having to be present had changed.Could be wrong though, hope he gets a VC, he deserves it.
