    Shameful
Know any abos? Churchill's quote about Arabs springs to mind. Something along the lines of "Some individuals may display sterling characteristics but as a race they are to be despised".

Wasn't Arabs, it was Muslims in general, he was in the Sudan at the time. And that was a very inaccurate quote.

Racial 'Pass' Laws - applying to Aborigines - continued in Joe Bjelke-Peterson's Fascist Republic of Queensland until 1979...long after they were universally condemned in South Africa.

In sum, there is a lot of myth surrounding the 'Big Country'. A cursary read of books about the fall of Singapore do not show the Aussies in a particularly good light, especially Gen Gordon bennett.

Given that Italians, Greeks, Serbs, Croats, Germans, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indonesians, Lebanese, Egyptians, South Africans, Rhodesians, English, Scots, Irishmen, Welshman, Spaniards, Portuguese, Malaysians, etc, etc, etc have managed to make a go of it here and the abos are still on the piss and fucking their kids, do you think they may be slightly out of step with the rest of us. Black pikeys is all they are, socially conditioned over the years to be perennial victims, and everything is some other cunt's fault. A telling point for me was outside Paddy's Markets in Sydney. A Chinese bloke was busking with a sound system backing him up, selling cd's of his music. He was playing a didgeridoo. Twenty feet away were two abos begging for beer money and fags.

Then again, books that don't try to shift the blame from Percival, et. al. might point out that while Australians made up 18% of the personnel in Malaya, we made up 80% of the battle casualties and were the only troops that had anything even approaching success in that campaign.

Editted to add: that 18%-80% is quoting a speech Prime Minister Keating made... so it may not be entirely factually accurate

Some good books there mate and even the comments posted are more balanced than the orginal article!

After listnening to the radio interview between the two DJ's the public were allowed to have their say and pretty much every listener had a very skewed sense of historical reality.

I think there is a massive difference between cultures here firstly, the Aussies are great at acknowledging their Veterans and looking after them (Anzac day is a fantastic can never remember much about them,, your always made to feel welcome as a Brit).

However as has been mentioned like Major General Gorden Bennett (GOC 8th Aus Inf Div left his troops to the Japanese at Singapore) this and other issues are whitewashed and you have to go looking for them, there isnt much in the way of admission of their own failings.

Anyone who challenges the positive view of Australian history be they Max Hastings, the authors of the books mentioned are simply given it 'belt-fed' by the Aus popular media

Contrast that to us (Brits) we're probably the most self critical people on the planet when it comes to fucking it up eg Isandlwana, the Somme, Dieppe we almost revel it in.

With the Aboriginal debate raised, one thing I admire about the Kiwi's is that they have come to terms with their frontier colonial wars there is a national memorial. The Indigenous 'frontier bush wars' of Aus however there is no national memorial at Canberra:
