Vietnam: The Australian War by Paul Ham

I'm thinking of buying 'Vietnam: The Australian War' by Paul Ham and added it to my amazon wish list this afternoon (I got a nice shiny Kindle for Christmas!). I've read Ham's book on Kokoda and thought it was excellent, is his Vietnam book worth buying or are there better books available on the Australian commitment in Vietnam?

"Remember that you are an Englishman, and have consequently won first prize in the lottery of life". (Cecil Rhodes, 1902).

"The game's afoot: Follow your spirit: and, upon this charge Cry 'God for Harry! England and Saint George!'" (Shakespeare, Henry V, act 3, scene 1).

"I know of no method to secure the repeal of bad or obnoxious laws so effective as their stringent execution." (Ulysses S. Grant, 1869).

No worries. I've read a few books about the French in Indochina and can recommend 'Street Without Joy' by Bernard Fall and 'The Last Valley' (can't remember the authors name).

    This is worth a look:

The Battle of Long Tan: Amazon.co.uk: Lex McAulay: 9780099525301: Books

Inevitably the SASR involvement seems to have got more sales but this is a non sensational read:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/SAS-Phantoms...4936305&sr=1-3

Gary McKay has written some others, eg

Sleeping with Your Ears Open: On Patrol with the Australian SAS: Amazon.co.uk: Gary McKay: 9781865082974: Books

Depends on what sort of genre re Vietnam ie official history or personal accounts.

On the personal accounts I reccomend the following:

In Good Company: One mans war in Vietnam by Gary McKay (excellent junior officer reading)
Sleeping with your ears open by Gary McKay (Australian SAS soldiers tell their own story of the actions they experienced in Borneo and Vietnam.)

    Enjoy.
The above is a temporary digression while I ride one of my hobby horses, a rant by me a soldier, failed lothario and inmate of a proudly independent country, founded by thieves and whores. The gratuitous opinions and comments contained above are more scatological than ideological. Scientific tests conducted by "The Ponds Institute" have determined that I have a very tenuous grasp on reality. You are reading the thoughts one of the biggest wanker currently walking around on four, oops, two legs. I have an ill-informed opinion on pretty much everything. In conclusion there is no truth to the rumour that I am a Philanthropist, Sesquipedalian, World Traveller, and Bon Vivant. Although, I may or may not of been associated with Left and Right Wing authors & lecturers, travellers & bums, wars fought, revolutions started, assassinations plotted, uprisings quelled, governments run, subversion's organised, Communists terrorised, bars emptied, bars filled, Virgins converted, Tigers tamed, Crocodiles castrated, and students tortured.

And of course one of the best (IMO probably the best) Vietnam War films out there:

If yot want a good read about Vietnam, then I can highly recommend this, Fortunate Son by Lewis B. Puller he saw service with USMC as a Platoon Leader until he stepped on a mine. It won a Pulitzer prize and details his life as an U.S Department of Defence Attorney after med discharge until he blew his head off. In fact google it when you can and have a look mate.
