Frankly, I welcome tthe fact that if you go digging out celebrities you are likely to get stung. That's not what LI is for - Facebook is for collecting faces, LI is for business networking.

There's a bell curve of contacts on LinkedIn: if someone only has a few contacts then chances are they don't take it too seriously or are new. If they have hundreds then you have a serial networker who is basically playing a numbers game and is probably best avoided.

So whilst I amble around it looking for past colleages and friends (it is very good at finding/suggesting them) I don't use it to stalk celebs. As for contact requests, they are either friends or headhunters. It never hurts to chat to a headhunter... :D

Like any social networking site Linkedin should be treated with a measure of caution. If the deranged ex squaddy who blames you for his time in MCTC/ bloke who's wife you shagged 10 years ago/ loser who thinks you cost him a business deal, finds your profile, you might get ambushed in the office carpark.

Just worth bearing in mind......

I've used it for three years now, and have developed a number of useful business contacts. I would recommend making sure you have your work recommended by former customers/colleagues. If you are looking to use it as a method of gaining employment a number of head hunters will filter potentials by looking at people who are recommended multiple times (especially by US customers, who are more prepared to give honest references to recruiters).

Be careful which groups you join. Many of them are hunting grounds for whoring networkers who only have their own interests in mind (many of them pesky little Indians who think they're corporate because they have a PC).

You too? I get about three or four rudderless connection requests a week from India. Always reply with 'I don't know this person' as I gather it does something nasty to their background rating.

I think TheList should just become a group on LinkedIn. I just don't go there anymore - there's not enough web 2.0.

Also, people who post on it too regularly clearly aren't working hard enough for their employer. Quite unlike arrse of course....

The persec arrangements are actually quite good. It's possible to have a public profile which can be kept high level and a more detailed personal profile which only your connections are able to access. My home address, work address, home number etc are on neither.

Am starting to cast my eye at a career move in the new year and am very impressed. I used to be a huge advocate of The List but its new online format isn't to my taste - it was perhaps too simple but very user-friendly on CD but now its just awkward.

LI is more complicated, but seems much more useful. Wish I hadn't coughed up to renew my membership of The List now.

As to the post, frankly linkedin is perfect for someone with the balls and thick skin to send out emails such as the one you got. It makes sense. Already proven business overlap, good idea to see if there is money to be made between you. Face it, it is a networking site, not happy families or sites to link to friends..

Just as always, be a bit canny about when you link. First find out if there are business possibilities before you take the plunge.

I use LI & because I work for a US Fortune 100 company, I have just under 100 contacts.

I do a cull once a quarter and keep it to less than 100 at any one time for the reasons mentioned about "LIONS".

My advice is that you use it for research, putting your CV out there and keeping abreast about what is gong on in your business sector.

My profile exactly mirrors my internal company profile. My internet presence is reinforcement of the same things so when recruiters (and they do) go searching for more about you only get the same level of controlled information that I want out there.

If you are contributor - ensure you are in a frame of mind saying "if I was asked the same question in a job interview, would I answer it the same way?". The reason, I have and did. The implications of going "off-piste" are obvious.

"Linked In is for business, Facebook is for mates" however nothing is ever as clear cut. You will find a lot of 'meeja' who hang out on FB as it's 'cool' and think LI is for old stiffs. So if you want to work in meeja/design/Creative etc, then FB is a better spot.

I do have a lot of contacts on LI. Every one, bar three who I've spoken to, I have met and connected in order to expand my network. It is about what I can do for them as much as what they can do for me. Therefore, I write presentations which I publish on Slideshare, I comment on discussions and I pose questions which create feedback.

In terms of quantifiable work I get out of it - to date, little. I have been belting it hard for the recession and that has been a bad time for many.

If you are more of an outward looker, want to meet relevant people for introductions, discussions about work opportunities or to research commercial situations, then with a bit of savvy, you can get the warm intro that counts tenfold in business.
