I've pretty much got the recall sorted with my four month old and can easily call him back if confronted by sheep or cattle but he's such a sociable eejit that other people and dogs are a complete distraction that we haven't overcome yet.

Consequently I avoid the normal dog spots and having dug the map out we go right off-piste along geen lanes and forestry tracks that are almost never used by others and where he can fill his boots off the lead.

The only people we have ever encountered have been Ramblers, on two occasions, striding along with all the fun of a death at a birthday party.

Luckily I have enough infantry ninja skills left to spot groups of people crashing along in bright orange anoracks before they see me and on both occasions by the time we met I'd got him back on the lead under tight control standing well off to one side to let them pass.

Not so much as a nod or some eye contact, never mind a 'hello' or a 'nice out here isn't it' - nothing apart from a chopsy attitude and a positively icy ignoring of me and the puppy.

Now I'll be the first to say that it's largely down to the Ramblers' Assoc that all these byways still exist, and thank them very much for it, and I suppose often they've had to be a bit confrontational with farmers and landowners over rights of way.

But there's no need to be so miserable about non-Ramblers being out and about taking the air.

Perhaps it was because they were togged up sufficient to assault the North Face of the Eiger and I was in shirt sleeves, I don't know - but surely when you're out a couple of miles or so from the nearest road there should be enough shared cameraderie for a cheery nod?

    Miserable b'stards!

Personally I think it's a scandal. There are some terrific rescue places about - the one in Bath being a very good example.
There are similar issues with the US version. Much more good work done by smaller local/regional groups.

"A democracy cannot survive as a permanent form of government. It can last only until its citizens discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority (who vote) will vote for those candidates promising the greatest benefits from the public purse, with the result that a democracy will always collapse from loose fiscal policies, always followed by a dictatorship." I'm sure you're right and a lot of so called charities here are scams.

I like my little local "no kill" shelter. They recently graduated from a small shelter to a larger shelter when they bought a small farm from an old lady who had grown to old to farm her land. Supported by local donations from little boxes in most stores in town plus the annual "Bark and Howl Ball" Great place run by volunteers. The lady who handles adoptions is referred to locally (but not to her face) as the "Cat Nazi" because she approached every adopter as a potential animal abuser and requires letters of reference. A couple of years ago when my cat and dog both died within a few months I had actually had the vet write me a reference in preparation for meeting her. Then my son moved to Los Angeles leaving his two cats with me and the letter was not needed.

JJH - About the "doggy pony express" transports, well done! Bravo Zulu!! Lots of work and good of you to do it.

Had a think and do not know of any animal related charity scams. I'm sure their are some out there.
As I have said I do some work for a Cocker and Springer rescue and help others out from time to time. I don't know of any one who is paid working for any of them. Obviously some can shakers will be bogus but an organised one would hit the radar quite quickly as with dodgy forces charities.
If I come across one I will give the Doberman and Rottweiler rescue a call!

By the way I'm keeping the Cocker I was looking after whilst she was in season. Turned out to be a phantom but hey ho.
We have clicked very well and I feel quite guilty having a dog with no ailments or behavioral issues. She is great in the field and has the makings of a fine worker. I have lost 8kgs in seven weeks with all the long walks. She is always off the lead with good recall, So long as she is not busy! Made for each other. It is a pity she ignores my old springer, the old girl tries her best to be friendly.
She had to be re-homed as a family member became allergic to her. Tragic as you can tell she was well loved.Name: SDC15083.jpg

Funny, but I've come across the same miserable bunch here in the Cotswolds, with their carbon fibre poles and Sherpa boots. Why do so many of them yomp in such huge multitudes?

If they see my mutt off the lead, all I get is "Christ, Bill. It's a pitbull" and they start with the "will you call your dog off please!"
