- 03-05-2012, 06:03 #4261"A democracy cannot survive as a permanent form of government. It can last only until its citizens discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority (who vote) will vote for those candidates promising the greatest benefits from the public purse, with the result that a democracy will always collapse from loose fiscal policies, always followed by a dictatorship." My lad would sleep roaching with his head hanging over the edge of the sofa and a delicate strand of drool slowly stretching to the floor. Lovely

Yes, my guys do the sneezing thing. Apparently it's called 'reverse sneezing' and is caused by a pharyngeal spasm due to irritation in a long nose. If the dog keeps sneezing, covering the nostrils will make the dog breathe through its mouth and clear the irritation into the back of the throat. The drooly roacher (who was a bit of a screaming prima donna) used to do it with great chest heaves, head down and his elbows sticking out like he was about to kark it. It's rather alarming to watch if you haven't seen it before and I reckon vets must make some easy money when people rush their dogs in for emergency treatment.

Yes its pretty dramatic when you see it for the first time, a few of mine have been prima donna's, someone told me this is a learned behaviour in them because when they are racing and they are injured they get treated , ie more human contact, such as massages and just general contact, not sure if that true or not but it suited my first males personality

We also allow ours to be blood donors, as the vets love grey because they are easy to handle, and don't freak out when they take a little blood. We don't do it regularly but its nice to help out a bit, as dogs need blood in ops too.
A sad fact here in Australia is that the vets when training carry out a lot of procedure on euthanised greys as they are easy to get hold of from the tracks etc, my wife trained as vet nurse and confirmed this, although she was mainly involved with the dogs they practiced restraining and grooming as the college had a few resident greys, but they were spoilt rotten
Australia is very different to UK, they still sell dogs in pet shops here, and its very sad to see overgrown puppies in small cages, promotes the impulse buys I think too. Also we lived in mining town a while ago, my wife worked at the local vets there, they often had people come in with healthy young dogs and pay to have them put down as they were "moving back to Perth" , its pretty sad and the vet is obliged to do it!! as there are no rescue schemes in these rural towns. Still its better than the scumbags that just leave the dog in the back garden and do the bunk to Perth, they usually get picked up by the ranger a couple of weeks later and have to be euthanised because of malnutrition and dehyrdration :(Any lucozade in the fridge champ? I just left all my electrolytes in your daughter

Max is on the mend - the medication seems to be working and he's managed to eat all of his breakfast today, albeit rather slowly. He also gave a cat a good barking at while out for a walk earlier.
Mind you, he may be having trouble eating but it didn't stop him scarfing down half of my doughnut mid-morning...

In the career of glory one gains many things; the gout and medals, a pension and rheumatism....all of these fatigues experienced in your youth, you pay for when you grow old. Because one has suffered in years gone by, it is necessary to suffer more, which does not seem exactly fair.
