Monty's right about leaving a dog alone. Four hr should be the max. If you are top dog then the moment you leave the house you pet is just waiting for you to return. Owning a dog is 24/7 and all the more rewarding if you understand that. You just cannot switch on and off such a powerful bond they have with us.
Some how all my dogs have found me when I have been looking the other way, all were/are rescues and with the exception of being springers all very different. We adapt to them as well as visa versa. some times we don't realise it but we do, we change in subtle ways. What ever happens I think we learn as much as they do and that's got to be a good thing.
JJ keep your hand in your pocket and lookafter yourself at the moment. Arsers over here can sort that sort of thing out if it's needed. Your sounding a bit more like your old self though when you said "asking only for a pat on the head and a bit of food and water in return for absolute devotion and loyalty" I thought you were talking about us Brits!

Haven't had an accident in years. See a lot in my rear view mirror though.

It's very unlucky to be superstitious.

Would that be the supressed Amphibian warfare variant of the Ruger MkII? If so, nice!!!

I have an old Mk III which I use when checking my traps

Whatever his mental state, I do wish that while he is spending 18 mos. in the Plymouth Co. Jail that Sheriff McDonald could forget to feed him the usual 3 meals a day.

As we're now talking about rescue dogs, I'll gen you up on my mongrel...

Ten years ago, me and my estranged wife got this puppy (5 months old) - I wanted the three-legged GS, from a rescue centre called 'Last Chance' in East Sussex - it literally is what it says, as they take animals from dog punds that are about to be destroyed! We found her - well, my youngest daughter did - by accident, as it was in a low cage with a blanket over it.

The place has a large, fenced sand area to take the dogs and to see what they are like. My daughter, whilst walking her on the lead, stood on her paw and the only reaction from the dog, was to yelp in pain - no snapping, signs of agression or anything! This dog, has the best temprement one could wish for - great with all children, adults and all other animals....well. she's not too keen on the neighbour's pet goat!

My marriage ended 2.5 years ago and I brought the dog with me to Germany (after getting the pet-passport sorted!) and I have never regretted doing so! I can leave the house for literally two minutes and when I walk back in, it's like I had been away for hours!!

The only downside with her, are that she is scared of all loud noises (like sudden bangs and thunder) and that she continually moults and leaves white hair everywhere!!

Wouldn't give her up for anything!!!

revelling (out of control partying) is a problem, but just dancing is okay. but when you start drinking, copulating, etc...therein lies the problem

I imagine it is if you own a dancing dog that likes drink and sex ... oh, you're talking about Brian from Family Guy right?

Years ago it was suggested that an apple a day kept the doctor away. But since all the doctors are now Muslim, I've found that a bacon sandwich works best.

I hate all this terrorist business. I used to love the days when you could look at an unattended bag on a train or bus and think to yourself; I’m having that.

Actually mine is the 22/45 pistol, bull barrel, with screw on can. When one fires subsonic round with wet can and put your thumb against the slide to hold the bolt in battery one only hears the shell casing hit the ground. Sweet.

About like the Super Colibri report here:

From that moment on, the majority (who vote) will vote for those candidates promising the greatest benefits from the public purse, with the result that a democracy will always collapse from loose fiscal policies, always followed by a dictatorship." I meant no offense whatever and hope I did not come across as the "ugly american" doling out cash pretentiously. I just cannot abide seeing a poor dog in distress. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.
