Re: ARRSE Kennel Club - A Dog Owners Thread
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years.
He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.
'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
Gesturing toward his dog the traveller asked: 'Can my friend come in too?'
'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.
As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'
'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'
'How about my friend here?' the traveler pointed to the dog.
'There should be a bowl by the pump.'
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.
When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.
'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.
'This is Heaven,' he answered.
'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'
'Doesn't it make you mad that they use your name like that?'
'No, we're just happy that they filter out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

The mutt killed one two nights ago (it trailed across his ear when he was sleeping) with one snap, but thankfully he spat it out when told.

Is there anyone who could provide with with any hints on making a good whelping box? My Springer Bitch is 45 days into her pregnancy so it is now time to build a good sturdy whelping box for her. I'm changing her food to a higher-quality brand and reducing the length of her walks, too. She is expecting a minimum of five (Spaniel-Retriever Cross - retriever found a hole in the fence!
) I'm sure a plain and simple box would be fine but any ARRSE dog breeders out there with any other advice - it would be most gratefully recieved.
Thanks

Re: ARRSE Kennel Club - A Dog Owners Thread
Hello all (especially Ugly)
Elizabeth (a.k.a. Lizzie) is gone at 15 years 8 months. Good innings for an English Springer I think.
Lizzie piccy
As some of you might remember from earlier posts she has had her share of problems over the past 3 years: high blood pressure, arthritis and losing an eye to a retrobulbar abcess. She has had increasing problems with the back legs and less vision in her one eye but has been a pretty happy dog.
I knew her time would come and have been dreading the day I would have to end it. She pretty much made the decision for me. On Friday she stopped eating and did not eat all weekend. Last night (Sunday night) I could not sleep well worrying about the dog. This morning when I got up she could not walk at all. I called my secretary to tell her not to expect me soon and carried Lizzie of the the car and off to the vet. The vet and the vet tech were wonderful and gentle and the last thing Lizzie knew was the vet tech patting her as I rubbed her ears saying "Good Girl Lizzie, Good Girl" .
I was worried about telling my son, in university in another state. Didn't need to worry, Brian spent his time telling me that I had made the right decision and that he knew when he was home in March that he probably would not see her again.
I won't get a pup right away but i will retire in a year or so and then will be able to care for a pup properly.
It has been an emotional day but the anticipation was the worst part. Once the decision was made, it actually brought a sense of peace.
By the way, for the benefit of the Britsh ARRSEr's, when she was a pup my son named her Elizabeth as she was an English Springer and she should have the most English name he could think of. I hope H.M. Elizabeth R. never finds out. On the other hand she is supposed to love dogs so she might not mind at all.Giving power and money to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to a teen-age boy - P.J. O'Rourke

Unlucky mate - it's the moment all dog-owners dread. Hang in there. Trust she will be buried with full military honours at the bottom of the garden.
