Ah well, guess I have to get used to the massive blank columns on either side of the page.

Resized them down to 1024x768 from the native 1920x1200, Chrome (19) and Firefox (12).

Ahh yes, the decision between variable and fixed width. We've vacillated over this a number of times and have gone back to fixed width as it just makes it far easier to design the site. Here is a challenge for you, find me a decent content based web site that has a variable width? Wikipedia is the only one I can think of but their page layouts are incredibly basic. Anything more complex like the BBC site needs fixed width.

A gaming website I visit seems to handle it and it's also a vB based forum though I don't know how much tweaking has gone into it behind the scenes, but there is a Forum Width (as a % of your resolution) option available in the usercp.php page it uses. Looking at it pre-login with IE also shows it as fixed width, so might be a profile tweak that's been added.

Obviously this site used to be variable width so know it can be done. The problem then comes once you try and do any sort of complicated layout. Trust me we've tried!
