Couldn't agree more, I have had some RAF Regiment on attachment - no issue with them as individuals. Their role is a bit crap and they are in denial. If I was in the RAF Regiment I'd be big timing it for all I was worth!
I have only ever worked alongside them once. By that i mean did their job for them briefly. I didnt think they were anything special (I have also worked with booties and para's and was very impressed) however they new how to use a rifle and said yes Corporal to the right questions. What more can you ask for.
Serious question though-You all say that you could do the job but do you want to do the job?????? You are all collectively extracting the urine out of the RAF Regt but do you really want the jobs that we do????
I think the Infantry guys would very much look forward to a couple of years out of the continuous Op tours for a bit of R&R terrorizing the NAAFI and the patch in a sleepy RAF Camp.
I've got to say that I'm resigned to the fact that the Line Infantry will take on the RAF Regts responsibility for Airfield KP Defence. It has been done by Reg Bns (a complete misappropriation of combat power and frustrating as we have enough to do) and by the TA. This leaves little justification for the Regt to continue to exist apart from the fact that the RAF CoC will never give up this role (loss of too much funding and capability). If the Rocks conducted themselves in a little more conspicuous manner, it wouldn't then put so many other peoples backs up. I've heard this big three bullsiht and it is exactly that. Banter with form behind it is good. Banter with little substance or a general lack of proffesionalism in your day to day conduct is not.
As for enjoying the role. No it sucks but I think it is the only way Inf formations/Bns/Coys will get some down time in the future. There are no fun posts left and it is now a case of what shade of feckin busy you are.
Which is a shame the raf regiment are needed to do their job.Interservice rivalry being what it is .Any army unit attached to crab air for airfield defence
is going to get shafted. At least the rock apes speak the same language as
crab air.

Well, given this thread I hope that you have some sympathy for me - I have to attend a wedding reception shortly packed with snow-drops and RAF regiment! Oh well!

Don't admit to being involved in this thread then, they may chuck bread rolls at you!
So, no VCs, no airfields seized from the enemy, so that leaves guarding airfields (apart from Akrotiri for some bizarre reason) and the odd oilfield. I rest my case. RAF Regiment can look as much like SF as it likes, but it is a guard force (albeit in denial). I seem to remember we used to have the Home Service Force for that in the cold war.
Akrotiri used to be the responsbility of 34 Sqn RAF Regt for many years until they were moved back to the UK in the mid '90s.
In the years following the Mortar attack on Akrotiri in '86, the resident Infantry battallion used to come down and help with the tasking from time to time, worked together quite well. On one occassion a Guards patrol on the Salt Lake thought thay'd have some fun with their new SA80 rifles. This involved running up to each other and pulling the cocking handle a few times to see how many rounds they could eject from their oppos magazine. Anyway, it all ended in tears with one guy failing to clear the round from the chamber and ended up blowing half his chin off...don't ask me how. He was also the signaller and damaged the mike on his headset. No spare handset and stuck in the middle of nowhere with no comms and bleeding heavily.
