Ah, I think I heard a similar story from a mate in one of the regular sqns.
A driver sped on when coming under light fire, insted of letting the guys advance to contact. He was given a kicking and soon left the Regiment.
Define light fire??? Bullets are bullets. Don't Slate someone on actions you weren't there to see. Seems daft he was given a kicking for taking action which may have saved their lives!
OK - to help the Rocks here - and I don't fcuking know why having dug them up on previous posts but Singapore wasn't the best example of [b]proper soldiers[b] being able to provide defence to an airfield or two. However that said I have heard stories of the crab techies giving it 'not our job son' and waiting for the japs to roll over the Army while they sat and did fcuk all.
I think that's why the Rocks get lumbered with teaching GDT (MATTs/ITDs to the rest of us). Yes there was a role then but I just don't see it now - sorry Rocks I might accept it if you didn't fcuking make out that you were on a par with the Paras or Booties - you ain't - get over it - nobody in the Army will ever have any sympathy for you cnunts until you realise that you are fcuk all special - so when you stop bigging it up then we might have some sympathy and let you get on with teaching MATTs/hanging around airfields because it will be one less thing we'll have to deal with
Saw one RAF sgt at the edinburgh mil tattoo thinking he was cool as feck by sitting on the butt of his rifle with the bayonet wedged in between the cobles till we tried to run him down in our tranny van. However I do think CI has a very good point,

With the army already over stretched how many units want to further stretch themselves by scrapping the raf reg and getting army units to provide protection to air bases. How many inf Csgts want to go to cranwell and teach raf engineer officers rifle lessons, and drill? How many inf coy OCs want to take orders from an raf station commander that wouldn't know a TAM if it was hurled in his face? How much one up manship would an army officer endure in the mess from his crab counterparts. How would a para feel looking at a member of the TCW (tactical comms wing), knowing that their allowed wings, para smock and a red beret(willing to be corrected but I think im right). The TCW dude didn't do Pcoy, the Para certainly did. How many army units actually want fufill the role of the raf reg? Other than the JNBC reg which is the best reg in the world.
I think the raf reg has a place, I myself have only had very limited contact with them and therefore certainly cannot comment on their effectiveness other than the sgt mentioned above , I've only really had dealings with two Cpls who seemed to know their stuff and struck me as being very switched on-perhaps this explained why they were getting commisioned, one thing I did notice though was that they were dripping in kit, imagine a cop vest and then an ordinary plce webbing on one man. He'd only need a rocket pak and he could deploy for a month.
Also, is this the correct place to confess at one stage I thought about Joining the raf reg? It was when they still had the rapiers and only if I couldn't join the gunners , Honest.
RAF regiment members think they are one of the big three or so they call it of the Paras and Royal Marines which is what I find funny.
The selection of individuals to the SFSG has been made from the Parachute Regiment, the Royal Marines, and the RAF Regiment. The group falls under the operational command of the Director of Special Forces and is part of the UK Special Forces Group.

Say no more eh?
Rabid if the fourth service was the Girl Guides they'd be in the press release too - and they would crack jokes about the RAF Regiment.
"Hi my name's Jane, I'm twelve years old - and I shi.t the RAF Regiment"

Oh please speak to the 1 Para blokes even they don't think their SF. No extra training just a different role. Besides to get the funding and apporval it had to be a "joint" support group.- hmm making up the numbers i think.
You are infantry trained members of the RAF - you are neither here nor there. Just one other question while the 1 Para lads have been out on ops supporting the SF in contact and utilising Mortars how glamourous and exciting and SF-ish is guarding the SH FOB ????
To the sad crap hats with the witty RAF regiment comments, dream on, the prospect of you getting through Regiment basic training, let alone making it through to 2 or 3Sqn is between slim and zero. Why do you think we supplied so many special forces through the 70's and 80's? Because it wasn't a huge stretch after going through the training for the Para Field Squadrons.
I notice the comments come from the army's leading shock troopers of cooks, drivers and general FPP's. Every conflict, every war, every engagement since 1945, one bunch have been at them all, the RAF Regiment, and who the f**k joins up as a soldier to be in admin, stores, the kitchen? You closet stewards.
What about the Falklands campaign CDS?? As i was under the impression that the only contribution by the RAF was the long range bomb run by the vulcans on the runway at port stanley. I believed that all other force protection from the air was supplied by the fleet air arm?? Serious question.
