    Formed units or IRs?

Re: HAC Open Evening - 19th May

I went along to this event in the end. Surprised to bump into colleagues from the office enjoying an evening out but to be honest they had no intention of joining neither the HAC or the TA. A colleague sent me this clip of some "action" on the evening. link

Highlight was definitly the Dushka letting rip (and promptly jam!) and watching people wince. Lowlight... probably the Cavalry display which looked a tad out of place (but then it is the HAC).

I spoke to the Major (Jolly fellow) who claimed to be organising things and he said 'Bloody amazing, where do they come from? I didn't invite half these people, they just turned up!' Not sure how much the Army operates by osmosis though. I assume/hope this will be an annual affair though and as has been said it shoul be a prime opportunity for all the TA and reg in London to get some exposure.

I haven't yet seen an HAC demo that didn't look badly rehearsed and/or completely cocked up. I assume its all to lull the bad guys into a false sense of security, either that or its impossible to look impressive on a cricket pitch engaging an enemy at 10yards whilst wearing SAA order. Hopefully its enough to impress the civvies.

Well, it looked better on the day.....

Yeh. So whats the HAC for ? Yeh yeh you send peeps to Afghan but what does the regt do ? Seems like other TA units (LONDONS) send companies all together because they are trained to do what they do on tour. But as far as I can tell from here if you join HAC all you do is fill in other units ?

So that is just single blokes and not formed unit ? Management in my unit says HAC will be next after signallers because you dont send formed units on tour.

At some risk to being accused of biting - the HAC, I believe was the first TA unit since Cyprus to send a formed unit on an Operational tour which was Bosnia Op Lode Star in 1997. They had IR's serving there previously however, I met one.

Earlier posts on this thread point out Telic and Herrick contributions incl I think around 40 guys, which for a unit the size of the HAC was a massive contribution given the unit's size, probably beyond the effort required by a TA Bn to field a Coy.

From this, I suspec you now have a useful yard stick to judge your management by! Should the HAC 'be next' then you can safely assume you are working for some switched on guys that know exactly how the wind is blowing. Should however the HAC 'not be next' then maybe you need to look at your options for moving on!

What my OC said was that all you do is fill in single jobs all over the place in different units = no unit role = likely to be for the chop.
