I'm not sure what he'd be doing wiht his "our troops are creating the conditions for Afghanistan to become a stable democracy" lines after having the inhabitants of the village set them up for an ambush. Personally if I were in charge of his next Min visit I would offer him a ride in a Snatch or a dab round Lashkar Gat/Basra with a foot patrol to see if he's got 10% of the balls your average tom has.

    GRRRR
I think You are talking nonsense. Blair et al had nothing to do with setting up that ambush

Thank God she was there to report it. The Govt is in serious sh1t over this deployment now. My heart goes out to the paras. You deserve better than this shower placing you in harms way. The lack of air support was a disgrace. The Treasury tried to send the RAF Harriers home this month thankfully they failed. Good luck to all of you out there, you embody the best that is British.

Are you the Sven who used to be a football manager?
By sending the troops there, in wrong numbers, on a mission doomed to failure he put the troops in the village as sure as little green apples.

An illuminating report indeed. Refreshing to read a first hand account simply telling it how it is without looking for a sensationlist angle. Forgive my ignorance but do these on-line articles appear in the paper issue as well? If not then they darn well should, should also be compulsory reading for Blair and his cretinous cabinet. Stay safe chaps and long may Ms Lamb continue her excellent pertinent reporting.

Re: Paras in Afghan firefight - first-hand report.

I read this first thing this morning whilst waiting to finish night shift.

I thought it was an exellent piece of work and shows the Britsh Army for what it is -- Brilliant and punching once again way above its weight!!

Contrast this to when I got in my car to go home where I found that I had left the radio tuned to BBC 5 live.

Nicky Cambell was talking about Heros fighting to the end led by a fantastic captain and how heat and dehydration had hampered them Was this bunch of VC's elect fighting far away in Helmond or Al Ammarah thought I?

Nope once again the media were treating a bunch of overpaid tossers who didn't even think to ask if it may be hot In Germany like they are attempting to save the world and we should all cry for them as they have had their dreams shattered.

We then switched to the awful news that two members of 3 Para had fallen (Rip fellas) in Afghanistan a female news type then switched to an embeded reporter for details and he gave us the background to the news and events and how it seems to be getting worse out there.

At the end of this piece the female news reporter concluded with the quote
''Oh well at least we have still got Wimbledon where a new hero has emerged''
Hero you don't know the meaning of the word you fukcing slag if I'd had the time and money one of the peices on Mr Campbells show would have been the sound of my car smashing through his studio wall and the further sound of repeated slapping of your face.

No doubt as the football team return home and the tennis player wins a few games Blair and Brown will be falling over themselves to play at being Englands (although I feel that the young scottish tennis player will be upgraded by the BBC to British as long as he keeps winning) greatest fans and be present at all the photo shoots to welcome the losers back home and bleat on about them being heros of the highest order and it wasn't their fault.

Who will go to Brize to meet the repatriated bodies of our young soldiers Swiss Tony? who has probably had to have a special breifing on the Parachute Regiment so he can remember their name on t.v and thinks that he has just been commemorating Waterloo or something.

Its obvious that this goverment dosn't give a fukc about the Armed forces any one who can read a history book will tell you that John Reid was talking crap when he stated that we can hopfully get out in three years without firing a shot and if senior Army officers led him to belive that shame on them it was only 20 years ago that we were pi$$ing ourselves at the Russians and they had far more helicopters and fighters than we could ever hope to muster.

As placed on previous posts this goverment is wanting more and more for less and less how many more soliders will have to lose their lives and familes ripped apart before people start to respect and support the armed forces with equivalent fervor that they do with the football team?

I was training in the U.S two years ago before deploying on Telic 4 and every where we went either in uniform (a welcome change) people respected us and thanked us for what we where doing even when we were invited to Yankee Staduium to watch the baseball they stopped in the fourth inning as and asked the crowd to respect the fact the American forces were fighting for them all over the world and didn't get to see live sports but got a later feed the crowd went mad cheering the Armed forces. Even now on t.v when questioned by reporters about the way the U.S Marines may have acted 90% of people still support them.

How many care packages did you recive in Iraq? I got none but the Americans had that many they were handing them out to our other Sqn.

Contrast this to the fact the football team had to bring Ray Winston on board to read insperational speaches from Henry v and Churchill
The fact that they are playing in the countries colours and our soldiers are at war (because thay are make no mistake) should inspire them alone the very fact that men on £1000 pound a month are willing to lay down there life so they can earn £90 000 pounds a week should be enough

And as for this goverment and its people get behind the troops give them your support they are the best of the best nobody is asking for the whole town to go mental when they return and run round waving flags on your cars it will embarress them

But don't belive the crap in the papers when they get wind that they may have done something wrong you try an do it see how you get on
If you do meet one in a pub pat him on the back back and give him an atta boy and a well done son but try not to ask how many they got it drags after a while just try and remember

They go and do it so you don't have to ask your grandad what he felt like if he particapated in any conflict and if he would want to do it again?
These lads are doing it over and over living in sh1tholes and carrying weight in heat that would kill that poof Rooney

Fellow Arrsers sorry for the length of this rambling rant but I was annoyed by 5 Live (p.s just to clarify I am a football fan)

    Thankyou

    I won't quote it verbatim.

Suffice to say - that was not a rant, but a well written and well expressed piece.

    I could not agree more.

Re: Afghan concern: more troops needed.

Just out of interest, if 'Operation Mountain Thrust' is destroying the British plans for a 'hearts and minds' campaign - why is the British Army participating in it?
