I think they are trialling it where we live - for months I've never been able to get a mars bar or red bull at any petrol station around here after midnight.

The only thing I recall seing in the Corps was a bit of steroid use and the odd bit of puff, that was the late 90's. In certain perce units people were partying from Friday night then crashing and burning late Sunday. They seemed alright and I'm really sticking my neck out to say that I'd rather be driven in a vehicle by someone who'd had a cheeky couple of grammes over the weekend than sharing a moving vehicle with any one of a number of camp pisspots, especially one that used NAAFI break and dinner hour to tan in dark rum with cokes whilst watching Ready Steady Cook (his signature nip).
Drugs are now as deeply entrenched in our society as they are ever going to be, fuck knows how much is blown into the economy courtesy of a £20 note and a nice thin library card to serve it up. I know a lot of horsey middle class, business owning types who enjoy nothing more than sitting in Piccolino's in Manchester stuffing it up there nose from a grubby little bag, they are happy, the dealer is happy and the bar gets to keep on tipping down expensive shite plonk down there necks at over a tonne a bottle.
(I'm there weekday nights 20:00 - 23:00, wearing a flat leather cap and white Fila boots, I no, cunt, I can't change a fucking £50.00....)

I'd say at least 30% of soldiers in the last 20 years have taken an illegal substance sometime in their army career.

IIRC the Dutch trialled 'E' for terminal cancer patients, to give them a bit of 'time off' from the pain, and spend some time with the family (shag), whilst feeling normal.
Don't know if anything came of it.
Those who say they will never need illegal drugs, don't get injured or need dental treatment, and avoid sore throats.
