Is it for the hose for the water cooling system? Also, there might be another plate attached to the back to stop the helmet snapping back and breaking his neck in case of detonation. I wonder how bullet proof it is?

Our EOD guys told us, this suit means the differece between open and closed coffin for you funeral...so they never used it.

The newspapers must have been talking about a different Afghanistan EOD Unit.

Just checked and no trained IEDD Operators from ANP or ANA have been killed, so yes...the papers reporting bollox again. A year ago the ANP Senior Command didn't know the difference between C-IED, IEDD, EOD and de-mining which maybe root of confusion (hardly unique in that respect - same applies to most of the UK press, some on this site, politicians and wedge chain of command) .

Briefer and Select Committee (assuming it is House of Commons) know feck-all. EOD and its training will be handed over in 2014 unless the good old US of A, who are paying for it, have a change of heart. Literacy and numeracy are a pre-requisite for starting EOD Training - so more bollox!

Shared many a beer with Operators who would dis-agree strongly with that comment. Also wished many times that I didn't have to wear it (or something similar). Saved me from getting mauled by a particularly nasty republican terrier-alligator cross one day in E. Tyrone.
