Not worried, just surprised. I haven't got one yet and will have to hunt around Islington tomorrow for a 'seller'. Anyway, I already do a lot of work for charity, I just don't like to talk about it....

Yes. I'm a lot harder than your average civvy...........................and I've done a sim 45..........at night.
mmmmmm but are you 60 plus, and can you take on the hoodies in anger.!!!!!!
Not even 40+ and I'd take on the hoodies with pleasure!
And the full weight of the law would smite thee with great vengeance. Would I sell them in certain areas? Would I fcuk. I'd rather do a sim45... at night. Erm... what's a sim45?

As stated on a couple of other threads about this matter, you should see Poppy People on the street from this weekend as local councils usually only allow one week for street collections. Councils have to licence all street collectors so whilst I initially moaned about the one week rule, there are only 365 days in a year and an awful lot of charities, so it's not so bad.

I think it has something to do with ill-fitting lightweights...

So even if people are against the wars in the two hot and dusty places, that doesnt mean they shouldnt wear a poppy. The poppy appeal is a charity, the poppy shows the respect to the fallen who died in WW1.
sadly, most people just dont bother wearing them.
Slightly different, but theyve brought out a band that shows support of our troops, john terry was sporting one in the paper a few days ago.

I was out and about in Nuneaton yesterday and there was a full size market stall with the RBL rep in it. Loads of stuff including scale model of the Cenotaph. The ex mayor was there as he always is, a couple of the old boys and two not so old boys. One of whom was wearing the sharpest charcol black pinstrip suit with a string of medals and a set of sf wings. Fu*k me but did he look smart, made me feel like a right slob in my scrufs.
On another note, I need a small favor from anyone in the wimbledon area.
If anyone one knows wimbledon cricket club. Down by the club house there is a tree that is on the boundary line. The tree marks the resting place of the Ashes of Maj "Buzzer" Haddingham RA MC and Bar. I have for the last two years since his death placed a wreath or had it placed for me.
Due to personal circumstances I can't make it this year. If anyone can spare five minutes to pay their respects and give the old boy a nod I'd be gratefull.

I live in the same area as you, and yes did notice that no shops near me have any poppy colllection tins etc ... went shopping at the angle Islington the other day, not a collector in sight, very sad sign of the times.

Echo that completely, we have to take on the role of collectors as some of the elderly veterans are now finding it a bit of a struggle.
I did a bit of poppy collecting last Sunday and it was as Dante says a great experience, people do care and give generously - some were putting £20 notes in the box! Lots of really good questions, I think if we could get more younger collectors it helps to bring home what Poppy day is all about to a younger generation. It's funny I think some people think only elderly people are allowed to wear medals
There is a great deal of support for the forces it is just not demonstrated in the American way.
Dozy - I will see you on Saturday for more collecting!

If there isn't a local organiser, get your Arrse in gear and do that yourself! And then you will be ideally placed to bully, cajole, recruit, or blackmail other willing volunteers to join your platoon. The dull bit is counting the money the week after Rememberancetide - you'll come to curse all the tight-fisted gits who've thrown a hand full of pennies and tuppenny bits into your tin! (A point worth bearing in mind just before you're next tempted to empty a load of shrapnel and pocket fluff in to the next available red tub!)
The more you put in to it the more the Legion gets out of it! I patrol my beat for three evenings, banging on doors, and asking for a contribution. Most folk are pleased that someone's made the effort and will usually chuck something in the tin - I don't take 'Oh! I've already got one' as an excuse; tell them they need a smart new one for church parade on Sunday, that, or another bit of banter usually does the trick. Some prat last year asked me for a White one: I 'sold' him a red one in the end, but made him promise to paint it white himself, and then turn up wearing it in church at the end of the week! Sadly he failed to attend!!
