So I just tried my first timed push-ups test. I managed 50 in the 2 minutes. First 20 were easy, then 10 more, another 10, then by the end I could only manage 5, 3, then 2 with good form before the time was up. I imagine you're allowed to take a few second breaks in the time limit, but does it have to be a certain way? Like, you're not allowed to rest on your knees or am I imagining this is too strict? XD It's times like these where I'd feel better off not being 6ft2!

Hi all.

Currently in the process of improving my run time for my AOSB in february, so I have a while yet.
However, my run time doesn't seem to be improving too much. The one I did last Tuesday was 9:56, albeit that was a best effort run and I was knackered by the end of it Very Happy At a normal decent pace I manage around the 10:10 to 10:25 mark but even after another best effort (9:58) I can't seem to be able to get it under 9:56. I needed to get it under 10:30 before February but as i've already done that, my target before feb is to down it by another minute, to roughly manage 8:50.

Any tips? Very Happy

Go swimming, and try tabata intervals. That pervet Mag_To_Grid put me on to them, and they are excellent if a little agonising

If you train for 1.5 milers by running 1.5 miles, don't. It's best to run 3-5 times a week doing 5-10 miles, then test yourself at 1.5 miles every 2 weeks or so. Works for me.

young_lofty:
ADSC run times based on job choices.

Below are the required run times that have been sent from ADSC Glencourse to all recruiters, applicable to all potential recruits and broken into relevant trade groupings.

PARACHUTE REGIMENT- Below 09:40 mins (See note 1)

INFANTRY, RLC 101 (PIONEER)- Up to 12:45 mins (See note 2)

R IRISH, RE, RAC/HCAV, RA, REME- Up to 13:15 mins

RLC, AGC and all other jobs not yet listed- Up to 14:00 mins

JUNIOR ENTRY- Up to 14:30 mins

Notes:
1:
Run time for PARA is dependant on static lift- If lift is over 116kg, then run must be below 09:40 mins. If static lift is under 116kg, run time must be below 09:18 mins.

2: All run times between 10:50 mins and 12:45 mins will be reccomended for Physical Development Course.
..................................................................................

EDITED TO ADD:

The times above are from ADSC, and not from any individual recruiting office. Each office may well have their own standards that they expect you to meet prior to attendance at ADSC, for any reason they wish.
As a result, if the time that your recruiter tells you that you must achieve differs to the time above, then listen to him/ her- don't think, or try telling them, that they are wrong because you have read this post, OK?

This site is the Army RUMOUR service after all- you don't know who the hell is telling you this, do you? Wink

The Army Careers Information Offices are there for just that reason- provding you with information.

So, When i go for selection. Im 16. Don't I enter as Junior? Im going in for Infantry. i haven't really started properly training yet. So i think i should start very soon. but if im joining as Junior do i still have to do the infantry time in 12:45And Less? Or do i aim for Lower than 14:30?

Aim for the lowest time you can run. I want to join RE, but they wouldn't put me in for selection until I could run the 1.5 miles in 10:30. It's okay if you can run it under your time limit, but you won't stand a chance against the other recruits if you can't get below 11 minutes, imo.

I've been trying that 100 push-ups program but I really seem to be struggling with it. The progression from week to week seems to be too much and I find myself repeating a week all the time.

In fact, I think I started it a couple of months ago and I'm still stuck on week 3!

Only do slow, proper form pressups otherwise it won't work.

Also if you can't do week 3 then go back to week two, I think the evil russian program may benefit you more because its a case of percentages of your best which you do all day. Give it a go, im going to post my results back here in 6 weeks time. Very Happy

Starting to see a BIG result !

Post Posted: Mon Sep 21, 2009 10:24 am

Well since i have started training about 3-4 months ago, i have seen a big result ! When i first tried running i was usless ! i couldnt even run around a small feild, I couldnt even do 20 press ups ( good form ones) i could only do 35 sit ups... Now today i am fitter than ever, i am constantly lowering my 1.5 run times ! i can now run 3 miles with out any major problems ! I have started the 100 press ups and 200 sit up programs, And my gosh they DO help you alot ! I can do atleast 35 press ups and 52 sit ups since starting the program about 2 weeks ago im now on week 3 ! I would suggest to anyone that is joining the army or even navy or RAF to go on these programs. I have seen a big change in my body aswell, got alot more upper and lower body strength. I am so glad i am joining cause lets face it, if i wasnt then i wouldnt even be doing exercise atall ! I have cut out on the drink totaly and fizzy juice ! eating alot more healthier and generaly alot more happier than i was say since 2008 ! Very Happy :D I cant wait to start basic training !

Thanks for the help.

10.00 mins 1.5 mile is no problem at all. As with the heaves can do around 7.

What's this I hear about 'grades'? There was no such system in place last time I passed back in 2007. How do they contribute to the joining process? Does a potential recruit with low grades pass? Or are they just lower down the pecking order when it comes to intakes?

Thanks for the help thusfar anway.

Much appreciated. Smile

A and B grades get you into the next avalible intake. C grades and down get you in after all the B grades ,that passed around the same month as you, have been assigned dates. Works something like that anyway, fivetodo will be able to give you the exact works of it though.

I'm also re-enlisting and these grades weren't around when I first passed either. How is each grade scored? I.e run time must be such-and-such for A grade and such-and-such for B grade...
