COMEDIAN Jimmy Carr has caused outrage by making a tasteless joke about soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The controversial comic stunned fans with the ill-timed gag about amputees the day after the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal.
MPs of all parties last night joined a chorus of condemnation with former officers and relatives of the many soldiers who have lost limbs in the fighting.
Downing Street took the unusual step of issuing a statement in response to the furore.
Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said: “Our brave Armed Forces put their lives on the line for all of us and deserve the utmost respect.”
There were gasps from the 2,500-strong audience at the Manchester Apollo on Friday night as Carr wrapped up his stand-up routine with the joke: “Say what you like about the servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, but we are going to have a ****ing good Paralympics team in 2012.”
Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox said: “Our Armed Forces are the first to have a rough and ready sense of humour but this goes beyond the pale.” And Colonel Richard Kemp, a former Commander of British Forces in Afghanistan, branded Carr a “disgrace”.
James Cockburn, stepfather of Marine Ben McBean, who lost an arm and a leg in a Taliban attack in February 2008, said the joke was “in poor taste”.
Ironically, Carr gave Ben, 22, a signed copy of his book when he visited Headley Court rehabilitation centre in Surrey, although the comic left him cold. “Ben thought he was a bit of a numpty,” said Mr Cockburn.
SAS legend Andy McNab said that while Carr has a point – a number of amputee servicemen have been snapped up for the Paralympics because of their athleticism and determination – “it’s not a subject for humour”.

Although to be fair, we will have a blinding Para Olympics team. I can't wait for the first time it's in the press that most of the team where in a pub celebrating when naked bar was called.

Might be worth going down Ladbrokes and putting a bet on the number of medals won by Britain at the next Paraolympics.

Also on the I.O.S. smuggest Briton's list, deservedly, you might say.
"Jimmy Carr oozes the charm and insincerity of a re-animated Bob Monkhouse". Although Monkhouse, in comparison, could be called genius.
Sick jokes might be viewed as Carr's stock in trade, he's been discussed on these boards already and not too favourably. Either a joke too far or a misfire, it's not funny for his victim nor would the wider audience appreciate the man's obvious desperation for a laugh, at any expense.
That Carr targeted soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan speaks volumes, and he seriously misjudges their mates, families and supporters.
It will come back to bite him, on his smug arrse.
Perhaps, hopefully, even enough to keep this smug tasteless creep out of mainstream entertainment. Permanently.

however, take a look in the NAAFI bar and see some of the groups we routinely rip to death, including the disabled. sure they don't think we're funny either.
if we dish it out so readily, we've got to be able to take it in the spirit it's meant when it comes our way. it's only a joke for fucks sake.

BTW the local news here (Meridian) did a piece about the Paralympic training team going to Headley Court and other placers to give the Ex-soldiers/airmen some guidance on fitness for the future with a view to 2012/2016. So as distastful as it may seem to some, I suspect he's more guided and informed than most.

Yes but we like to sit on the ourage bus arms folded bottom lip sticking out if people offend our delicate feelings
You see we can piss all over the street and make Hitler salutes in Germany but if someone pisses on a memmorial or slags a poppy we take to the outrage bus
It's what we do One Army TA & Regular outraged together and Arsse gives us that platform for us to express our outrage and hurt feelings
If Brown loses the next Election we may have to look at parking up at least 5 outrage buses and their crews
So please let us have a little of these threads
Shall we start a countdown to the first Chubb post?

He makes jokes like this all the time, about a wide range of people.
You know what you are going to see, when you see him. Admittedly hte timing might be a bit off.
Ever thought it could be a compliment in a cack handed way?

The problem with jokes is the fact that when people are making fun of people who are less able than themselves it hurts and i personally know that.
When a person laugh's with a person over their disability you know its only banter ,But when you have people who laugh's at a person disability this is where the problem's occur.

That is pretty much what I was thinking. More of a compliment than an insult.

As said earlier in the thread: if said in the NAAFI it would have got the usual idiots posting lots of "ROFL". Comedy often works best when there is an element of truth in the core.
