Puma?
You mean the top cover, and the back doors open?
You must have been an Ociffer, no self respecting Tom would have smoked a 'Marlboro.................The man died ffs, those things give you cancer! I always proffered 'Embassy No1'
Who can forget the thump-thump, thump-thump or the Arial Square Four?
Or a 650 Panther?
RB211 ?
Could there be another sound from the past that PrinceAlbert is about to use
WAHHHHHH
Is that the beast at HMS Sultan (RN Engineering School)...triple crankshaft, opposed pistons etc? Nearly sh1t myself!!
Being woken half pissed in the block "Active Edge" ringing in my ears.
The word "awkward" on RE diving course (code).
The howl of a Chieftan in the dark in BATUS....never had a clue where it was or where it was going
Rumour, gossip, scandal .......

my Avatar might give it away. you feel it 5 miles away and named one of my Shepherds after them becase she goes all twitchy when one's overhead. Gives me goosebumps every time. They're 40 years old and i can't see them being replaced for many years.

Bedford engines seem to remind me alot of my past but a sound that still makes me stop and think is that of a Snatch with air conditioning running.
The sound of 80`s two strokes, (Yamahas particularly) with Allspeed and/or Micron exhausts. Modern strokers just aint the same.
Not so much evocative, more haunting really....the sound of yer bike sliding along the asphalt...skkkkrrrsssshhhhhhhh.....crack....as it hits the kerb.
The racket of three Chieftans pulling past Bovvy entrance when I was six (frightening) had to look up out the car window
Nimrod at the Cenotaph...works everytime...sniff.
Still have an RD350lc on spannies (swarbricks ) and K&Ns , still sounds as good as they did first time round.
Loads of good sound memories , think the merlin is the winner so far , but why ? I,m at least four generations to young to remember them in service , my family has no connections with the RAF , yet the sight and sound of a Spit can bring tears to my eyes , I do share the same birthday if you count her birth as the first flight , and why she ?

The rattling noise the spoon makes as you scrape the last of the Ambrosia creamed rice pudding out of the (corrugated) tin can.

The loud droning/roaring of a pair of Rolls Royce Trent 700s at full chat not-very-many metres from you as the A330 they're attached to starts racing down the runway

1/. Merlin, Too young too have seen one in service but the Roar/Purr of the Merlin is a sound that always reduces me to tears !!!
2/.Avro Vulcan, Saw one take off at Biggin Hill years ago, By Christ what a Lovely Noise.
3/. After finding the grave of a fallen relative at Bleuetts Farm In Ypres attending the Moving Last Post at the Menin Gate with a School party from Wellington School Giving the Eulogy, Damn the dust that Night.
4/. Concorde,I used to live under the flight path to Heathrow and the whole Place shook when it went over.
5/.Virtually any V Twin Bike.
6/.Last Post,Nimrod, Military bands etc.
Went to the Royal Marines Concert for the 20th Anniversary of the murder of 11 bandsmen by the Cowards of the IRA on Sunday In Deal.
Highly emotionally charged and very Moving, especially when they played the Last post and Nimrod. More dust being blown round.
Also the spontaneous standing ovation for ten Residents of Headley Court who were their as well.
The welcome they received was awe inspiring !!!!!!
Well done Deal, Well done the Royals !!!!

The almost Lancaster Bomber drone of Herc engines as it takes off and the somewhat unnerving clunking of the undercarriage.
Then the shout of "Action Stations!"

People mention Merlin engine. I lived alongside Hornchurch aerodrome and they used to do massed take-off when the bombers were coming in. Then the sound of a doodle-bug, the sound of a Merlin, a bang and no doodle bug sound Very impressive for a kid of six.

Despite the serious ribbing the RAF gets from this site, (probably well deserved too) I see that many of you find the sound of aircraft from all sorts of eras captivating.
Maybe it's just a bloke/power thing but loud noises do seem to evoke strong feelings in us all.
I agree with KotB. For sheer 'power to noise' ratio it's the Lightning on reheat for me. End of the runway, on it's arrse and up all the way. (Bit like a bloody good shag really.)
Although the Merlin just has that throaty, guttural roar that gives you the feeling of raw, menacing power...
Don't I just talk b0ll0cks sometimes... Fridge - Beer.
