SOLDIERS who have had sex changes are to get their medals reissued to reflect their altered identity under new Ministry of Defence equality guidelines.


The 30-page document is part of a bid by the MoD to cut the number of sex discrimination claims made against it.

Why do they need new medals? Surely they are engraved with service number, rank and surname? I don't see the problem. Am I being thick?

I'm old and was in when we still had the WRAC, so not sure how the new system works but the only female soldiers serving are badged to Corps, not teeth arm regiments, correct???

Adding, I wasn't in the WRAC... Well not officially anyway!

Legs can surely clarify this one. As she is still serving, does she still have her 2xxxxxxx number issued when (he, back then) joined up, does she have a new Wxxxxxxx number, or a shiny new JPA 3xxxxxxx number?

If a guy (or girl) gets issued a medal under any circumstances in the gender they are, then they deserve it.

If the above said changes sex (Legs please help here!) then surely the medal was earned by the person in the original gender and can not therefore be worn by the new gender. (New identity etc, new engraving to a person that did not earn it, yet they did in a previous body)

IE: Sgt Butch Smith (Male) is awarded the MC.

Sex change: now Sgt Beatrice Smith ( )

Could it now be recorded that Female Betrice and NOT Butch was awarded/holds the medal.

Basically, "whoever" deserves the medal they received as "whatever" they were at the time. Therefore he/she should obviously and rightly continue to wear their gong(s), but why waste money changing the stuff that was factual when the award was made, (number, rank, name, unit)?

Be whatever you want but your medals are what they are. It's not like these folks are given completely new identities with a fake school record and picture of little Johnny changed to little Janey is it. I doubt that many people would care or even want the change made.

sounds like a late april fool to me,surely they can spend the money on something better than this.

Logically then, if a female gets married she should be allowed to have the name on her previously earned medals changed by the system. Does anybody know if they are?
