I have just seen on wikipedia (sa80 page), Nepal , Jamaica & Zimbabwe have purchased / are using them.

Do we really support Mugabe in this way?

Was probably a load of wobbly A1s. This is why he hates the Breeteesh so much.

How about the most useless and over hyped foreign weapon of all time?

Iraq WMD

Going further back in time we have the RussianT-35

How about the canadian Hughes Shovel also known as the MacAdam shield-shovel?

Quote:
The MacAdam shield-shovel resembled the standard portable infantry spade of its day in both size and shape. Its design however required it to prevent the penetration of, or at the very least deflect, enemy gunfire. As a result of this condition, heavier than usual steel was used in the construction of the blade; it measured at three-sixteenths of an inch thick.[3]Heavy steel was also used to make the shovel's detachable handle which measured four feet in length. Unique to the shield-shovel was the inclusion of a 3.5 by 2 inch sight-hole in the blade.[4] In total, the MacAdam shield- shovel weighed 5 pounds 4 ounces

Preliminary tests however revealed the unfortunate conclusion that the shovel’s blade was incapable of stopping the penetration of gunfire even from the smallest of enemy calibre arms. Its value as a digging tool was also questioned as soldiers commented against the shovel’s weight, its inability to be easily carried, and the fact that the blade was poor for shovelling loose soil as it contained a large sight-hole.

SA80 also went to the Romanian Navy

Equipment c*** ups - nothing wrong with the design, just the destination - An Iso container full of lawn mowers turning up in shaibah Log Base - Iraq - Giggles.
Cool

Romanian Navy with A1's and no foresight (might just be for ceremonial though)

How about the Yanks spending millions on Sergeant York and ending up with bugger all?
I think the Soviet Union had its fair share of projects that were a bag of sh!t too.
And just look at the USA's V-22 programme - what a horror! All that money and what have they got? A dog.
A lot of countries have shite defence procurement programmes, believe me.

A few recent US examples

Crusader
Comanche and its replacement ARH
FCS
JTRS
A-12
OICW
Tanker
Marine 1
DD-21
Seawolf

Opps missed the point, most of the above never entered service, Seawolf is good just far to expensive

There are more, just for the US Army (the RAH-66 Comanche helicopter is a good example: twenty years in development, binned in pre-production with billions down the drain building a radar-proof helicopter to look for insurgents in Iraq or Afghanistan) but suffice it to say, we're not the only nation to get it expensively wrong in defence procurement...

They screwed up the replacement as well.

Timmypig:
The RAN ordered 11 SH-2G Super Seasprites in 1997. The aircraft never entered SQN service, the program cost over A$1 billion, all for nought .... scrapped in 2008.

Mad Mad Mad Mad

Helicopters were intended for a ship that never showed up.

Another tiny problem was that the contract was signed in 1997 and the helicopters were built in the 1960's.

A lot of good helicopters were built/designed in the 60's: Chinook, Cobra, to name but 2.

Sea King

Wiki : The prototype flew on 11 March 1959. It became operational with the United States Navy in June 1961 as the HSS-2.

M60 machine -gun. A failed development of the MG42 which the septics were then lumbered with until very recently when they finally adopted the GPMG. Y'know, the one we got in 1960 or so. (In the case of my old Bn. in 1958 when they trialled them in Ballykinlar!) It had a short sight base, was prone to stoppages, had the bipod attached to the end of he barrel which made a qucik-change under fire a bit interesting I bet, and came with an asbestos glove FFS! Pure Tat I reckon.

And have you heard what a procurement and R&D f*ck-up the Bradley IFV project was? It cost BILLIONS, they made a film about it with Kelsey Grammar and Tim Whatsisface our of the Shawshank Redemption.......Robbins!
Back to the Frogs, the AAT52 MG, absolute shyte by all accounts and they're still stuck with the f*ckiing thing and of course, the grand-daddy of them all, the carrier Charles De Gaulle which is several metres too short for the aircraft it carries to land on it!!Priceless.

As for us , can anybody tell me why, exactly, we bought hundreds of SAXON APC's when there were stacks of perfectly serviceable Saracens lined up at Ludgershall for most of the late-1970's?

Does anyone know why we use them on Chinooks
We used to have GPMG on Wessex IIRC

Especially the early models with downward firing ejection seats to save money and weight
Plenty of pilots killed trying to roll it at 100 feet to eject upwards
