Old arcade game

Post Posted: Sun May 17, 2009 3:03 pm

At a mates barbecue last night we got on to talking about the old amusement arcades at the seaside and someone mentioned this old game - I used to spend about half my holiday money pretending to be a U-boat captain sending allied shipping to the sea bed. When you fired, a series of lights under the sea flashed showing the track of the torpedo. Any one else remember these?

I remember throwing all my pocket money into these things.

I also spent most a college grant/bursary on afterburner and the star wars arcade game that you could sit in.

Walking the dog the other day, I passed a dumped and smashed, gutted "space invaders" frame/machine. Sad...

There used to be a huge one at Penarth with 5-6 periscopes and convoys of 30 odd ships.

I was only about four and loved it.

When I was young we spent our time digging Anderson Shelters.

Later we got Space Invaders

Then we had rape.

Rape, ah, happy days. See our website for details.

Defender aaahhhh.

I remember Galaxian too - outstanding.

It was a machine casing like that one, that I passed the other day.

I think I've still got a Binatone home game kicking about in the loft.

Luckily enough I'm wearing my readers so can read that small print.

What was the name of the arcade game with the Uzi fixed on a post? Wolf or something??

I also remember buying at Woolies (Woolworths) a toy SLR...

Didn't we all mac!!!

I played a game a few years ago on my son's "TV plug-in-cheapo-console thing" that I hadn't played for many years.

River Raid anyone?? All you did was fly up a river shooting ships, planes and helicopters but it got harder.

Was glued to it, I was.

Babysitting my son's playstation (he was at ACF camp) I discovered Socom, ghost recon etc. That got me a written warning for sleeping in and being late for work three days on the trot.

Bloody addictive though.

That torpedo game; there is a newer version of it that is rather good fun. There is one at Felixstowe that I..........sorry, supervised grandson on. And, Operation Wolf is alive and well, in Hunstanton, amongst other places.

I was pure hell at Defender. Other notable mentions, Super Hang-On, Rastan Saga and Super Don Quixote.

Oh and a God on that Atari one where you had to shoot spikes coming out of the centre.
