A question, if you don't mind me asking Rockstar , I have signed up for the language course offered by DELC .By the time I have returned at the end of the year ,hopefully I will have learned some Pashto. Where do I stand in continuing my language skills , is there some sort of test / assessment that will allow me to cut in to a existing course? A lot of IF's I know but a help to focus a long term idea.

Unfortunately mate, you will start on day one of the course like everyone else. It'll probably be a good thing anyway as any Pashto you have learnt will, I imagine, be colloquial in nature, and it is unlikely that you will have had any of what you have acquired put into a grammatical framework.

Starting the course on day one should mean that Pashto grammar is delivered to you in the correct sequence for it to make sense to you, and will enable you to place what language you have learnt in theatre, into some kind of grammatical context, thereby explaining to you how the language 'works' and enabling you to formulate your own sentences and ideas, rather than just repeat phrases verbatim.

That makes sense as thats how my French is. No wurries, I am sure they will understand my hand gestures!

Hi All

First time on here. Just after some info. I'am looking at joining the TA, served 8 years in the army, and i was brought up in a pashto speaking family. i can speak pashto flunent. Has anyone got and information on what my best options might be.. or do you think the AGC might be intrested..?

Several options open to you from within the TA. Where do you live, what rank are you and what do you think about an FTRS Contract with an almost certain requirement to deploy?

More importantly why have you left the Forces after only 8 years?

I live in the south west. L/Bdr when I left 6 years ago. FTRS would not bother me. Once back from Iraq in 2003. Friends left the army, morale was low, f..... Up in my head. I left which I’ve regretted till this day.
but now i want to get back in. any help would be great...........

However, please be aware that to join the Corps, inclusive of the Reservists, there is an academic level (5 O Levels) that needs to be achieved prior to entry, and even that is dependant on an interview; your linguistic skill is secondary.

Having left as a JNCO your linguistic employment within the wider Defence arena will be limited to general 'Terping' normally working within a unit called the DOLSU (Defence Operational Language Support Unit). The more technical employment using your language is currently limited, in the main, to Regulars.
